Source for wood
« on: June 02, 2012, 03:57:46 pm »

Hi,

I am thinking of building my next model as a plank on frame.

The length at 48th scale will be about 60-65 inches.

I need some recommendations about wood for the frames, stringers and planks. Being an icebreaker it has quite a full form hull but the curves are quite gentle.

One recommendation was for planks of 3x15mm and frames of 6mm marine ply.

I have no idea what would be best wood for the planks.

Can anyone suggest a supplier of wood. I live in Glasgow.

Also, I need to track down some Jelutong. Any ideas where I could source this?

Thanks in advance.

Sandy

Sandy,

wood-supplies.com stock jelutong and provide a very good service at a reasonable price. I have also found that he is able to supply woods that are not listed on his website, e.g. I had given up trying to get apple until I asked him and he produced the goods.

Regards,

I would recommend cedar for planking. It bends easily, sands well and gives a great finish.

I got a couple of cedar stair end posts cut into 10mm x  100mm x 2000mm planks, then cut the individual 2mm planks myself. This gave me enough planks for 3 boats for 20 squids!
