And here... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-18314569

There was a BBC photo competition for the river pageant but I can't find any reference to it now.  >:-o

In OZ....we had 60 minutes of the pageant on our ABC television last night......I thought it was spectacular...... :-)) ...Derek

Absolutely right, Derek. I didn't see one presenter, and there were lots of shots of boats. I don't know who the ABC got its feed from, but it was first class...and no ads either, in true ABC style :-))

It would seem that the VAST majority of viewers were happy with the BBC coverage, me included.

As the late, great Australian Rugby League coach, Jack Gibson once said, "Some people would boo Santa Claus".

2400 complaints is a HUGE amount for one program that contained no swearing/violence/sex, was educational and inoffensive, and you have to remember that for every one who complains they assume there is something like 100 that haven't complained to get a closer idea of true feeling.

I know I haven't spoken to anyone who watched ho hasn't said what has been said here already.

Here is part of the reply i had from the BBC.

“It was our intention to go live onto more of the individual boats taking part in the Pageant but unfortunately this was hampered by some difficult circumstances on the day. We will be looking back at the coverage as a whole to assess the overall factual content and tone right across the broadcast. We will look carefully at any lessons that need to be learnt from this and re-invest these constructively into our future live events output.

We are very grateful for your feedback in helping us do this.”

The old cliché "We will look carefully at any lessons that need to be learnt from this and re-invest these constructively into our future..." blah, blah, blah..... Give ourselves a pay rise!

Don't hold your breath, they've got a chance to screw up two and a half hours of trooping the colour this weekend.  O0  >>:-(

If you guys thought that the BBC's TV coverage was rubbish you should have heard BBC Radio 2...................would you believe they appointed Graham Norton to the task, ensconsed in the River Room of the National Theatre with a succession of completely uninformed and uninformative guests. I recall the highlight being "Ooo look - there's some boats coming past the window now".
We pay them for this? Come back, Tom Fleming.

I wouldn't go to the end of the street to listen to Graham Norton.......can't stand him, his humour or his monotonous voice.........would rather watch grass grow and listen to the birds sing than one minute of the cretin. >>:-(

I am so glad that the BBC have admitted there are lessons to be learned from their amatuer coverage of the Thames River Pageant.
Hopefully these will be put in place the next time Britain has a Diamond Jubilee.

It was not as bad as the BBC coverage of the 1937 Spithead Review, in which Thomas Woodroofe famously just kept repeating "The Fleet's lit up (hic!)"    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpiTa7azQs

Totally agree Neil. Sadly though, when he was the subject of "Who do you think you are", I find that due to ancestoral connections with the Sheffield branch, I may be related to him.  :embarrassed:

I agree, he always looks like he would rather be some where else, which is fine by me!  Did he not take out some sort of court order to stop people talking about his size?

Watched this on the Tivo box when I got home after the weekend and was thoroughly smegged off that they focussed on the handdriven craft and there was virtually nothing on the live broadcast about the older boats. Plenty on the river boats, the passenger boats but b' all about the vintage boats.

Given the ineptitude of the directors and the appalling weather - some thoughts

The Royal Barge - looked like something over-priced and tacky from Harrods, though spare a thought for the guys who built the throne, which HRH and consort completely ignored.
The Gloriana - one of the sexiest rowing boats I have ever seen, beautiful, evoking the majesty of past times.
Boat handling skills, top marks for the Royal barge and the Philharmonic barge.
The boys and girls on the upper deck belting out appropriate songs ion filthy weather- deserve a medal.

The Chooky Embra was sae "xxxxx" off he threw a sickie for the rest of the weekend.

The changing of the guard / trooping the colour is on TV in the background, the BBC presenters strangely seem FUll of facts today!!!
