Shear Pin Problem Solved - I hope !
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:16:44 am »

Several members suggested the very thing that I ended up doing yesterday.
Got some proper diameter wire and ran it through the coupler and cut it long enough on both sides and bent the ends over on both sides of the coupler and crimped them against the outside of the coupler sothey won't be falling out any time soon.
I Ran the boat for 40 solid minutes at full throttle last night and did a number of manuevers and also ran it full reverse astern and all is holding together just fine.
May still add the tape over the wires for insurance. So far so good !
Many thanks to all for all the suggestions.

I read your other thread on this, too.  You do need to secure shear pins in their hole.  The centrifugal force and vibration will make them work their way out if not restrained.  My only experience with shear pins was in 7-1/2 HP or smaller outboard engines.  The props were driven by shear pins that were captured by the cupped nut on the end of the shaft.

Just be careful when you make your shear pins longer than the hole.  Make sure they stick out the same length on both sides or you can get an unbalance and vibration.
