M.T. Navena FD 172
« on: June 04, 2012, 07:37:33 pm »

1959 launched at selby by Cochrane & sons as Navena for J Marr & son Fleetwood and registered FD172.....after 10 years she was sold to P&J Johnstone Aberdeen and in 1973 was wrecked at Copinsay in the Orkneys, all the crew were saved......I scratch built the model at a scale of 1/32 with an o.a.l.of 53 inches, it has working radar scanners, lights.horn and engine sound....I have a few internal jobs to finish before the launch.........Trawlerman  :-) :-)......Sorry about the fuzzy photo,s :embarrassed:

Very nice model indeed - what motors did you use to spin the radars?
I'm just asking because I was reading a thread the other day about radars.

and now you've given me a conundrum Rod %%
I feel the answer should be obvious to an idiot but I really can't decide {-)

If you have a small oval radar dish and a larger bar type radar, and both rotate at 30rpm
............ would they appear to be rotating at a slightly different speed?

Now then Dave.....the answer to your conundrum is............I,ve no idea......I would think you might get away with it if you set them about 30 or 40 degrees apart......Rod :-))

It's about time you started your step by step build guide of your new trawler/drifter Rod.............I'm sure there will be a lot of interest in it from the very start of the build.........

come on, don't be shy.

Hi Rod,

beautiful model.
The transom stern gives it a fairly modern appearance.
Didn't know that transom sterns were introduced in fishing vessel design as early as in the late 1950s.
From there it seems a little step to the stern ramp trawler. But this seems to be a side trawler yet. Maybe a design of the transitional period?

Thanks Deadwood...Never thought about it before but now you mention it you could be right, although when they went to stern fishing the vessels lost all their character, like trains[ steam to diesel ]......Rod
