For us uninitiated, what is the difference between "standard" and side mounted and now surface mounted LED's as per the last couple of links  {:-{ {:-{

Surface mounted:...................... http://www.phenoptix.com/index.php/surface-mount-smd.html

Side mounted:........................... http://www.maplin.co.uk/side-looking-leds-10382

Also where would you use them on boats.

Thank you

Standard - tubular resin thing - domed top, two wires poking out of the blunt end to poke through a PCB and solder to the back, light shines out the dome.  Commonly 5 or 3 mm diameter, but can be odd shapes.
Side mounted - two wires as standard, but arranged so that the light shines out of one side.  Again, various sizes and shapes available.
Surface mount - no wires, just two metal areas that solder direct to the metal on the PCB, the light can shine which ever way that the manufacturer decides.  SMD was intended to aid miniaturizing electronic gear, the LEDs tend to be small.

The led's can be built into bulkhead/deck lights around your model to light up the deck, can also be built into a wheelhouse computor screen I know Umi has done this.

Hello
It has to be the side mounted LED as the look life floursent light fittings at 1:100 scale.
Micro leds surface mount leds etc I have no problem getting hold of at good prices. The side mount led are still a bit pricey at 65p each when you buy a lot of them.
