Voltage stepdown 22.2V to 12V
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:27:21 pm »

what would be the best way to do this?

I want to fit some lights and a sound unit to my Huntsman.  Problem is what I have in mind require a 12V DC supply and my drive batteries are 6S lipos (22.2V nominal)

Should I use one of these?

or a seperate accessory battery?

Switch mode UBEC units are 'noisy' electrically, even when suppressed, and would likely interfere with a sound system. I would always advise using a separate 12v battery where possible; it's nice and clean as a power source.

It depends on the current drawn by your sound system. 1AH should be OK for most types. Give it a go and if it craps out after half an hour then go for a bigger capacity pack - no point in buying something new without trying what you already have.

Dont forget to use a battery protector to shut it off as the battery discharges - most amplifiers don't come fitted, but are perfectly capable of running a LiPo too low to survive.  A separate battery is still the best way to go.
