Robbe PT15 - MTB (of sorts) !!
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:55:01 pm »

If you've been on my other post http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=37507.msg375532#new

You will know I have picked up a Robbe PT15 and hope to do a "loose" MTB conversion and getting her planing  %%

Anyway she turned up during the week..... :-))

and the story so far is I have completely stripped down, sanded, ripped out all the insides and shaft, motor etc all ready......

I have gone with the Deans Marine Kestral (recommended by many here) motor and have set the new shaft in place, new motor mount made and stuck in and filled all hole, marks, dents etc as well with fibreglass filler.....

The new battery mount to hold the new 9.6v battery pack recommended has been placed right at the rear as suggested.

Anyway, kids are now in bed  :} so off to the garage to continue.....will try and update on progress as best I can.

Hi CJ, the crew were the Italeri 1/35 MTB crew. The actual boat is 1/40 scale, so the figures dont look to bad.

I will post some pick,s of the cabin for you later today mate.

Thanks again John, yes great thank you....mine will be a "loose" Vosper MTB, got a few things I want to do on it put not gonna be rivet perfect  :D .

Just want a playmate for my Fairmile RML  :}

Last night I managed to get her undercoated.

Luckily for me the forecasted rain never came today, so rather than a dry fit out of parts I took advantage of the sun (and the wife and kids out for the day) and got on with the painting  :}

Will undertake the dry fitout during the week and hopefully by the end of the week will get a test run in to see how she goes and get the tweaks done before fitting permanently into place.

Will try and get some more pics soon.

Cheers

Well, managed to build a stand finally so I can work without the wobble of the shoe box  %%

Managed to get everything dry fitted and tested, all seems OK till the new Planet RX wouldn't work !! Swapped out with the other in my RML and that works so off back to the model shop to swap !!!

Other than all seems to fit and look OK and work as it should  :-))

Water test will be next - If it stop's bloody raining  >>:-(

Hi CJ, are you fitting a cooling coil to the motor, I would normally fit one on that type of motor as you want
a boat that planes, the motor will be running at top speed so it will warm up quickly.
A new chap bought his 1st build PT boat down to the lake Sunday for it,s maiden voyage he had a 480 type
motor in it. After 30min,s he had to be rescued, the motor had overheated and burn,t out.
After a few recommendations and some good advice he says he will be back with a 600 type motor with a cooling coil fitted.

Hi John,

Well interesting point well made there, after having a Planet TX/RX issue which was resolved very helpfully by Howes Models in Oxford, I took her out with fellow Mayhemer Grub yesterday for a test run loosely fitted.

Well success  :-)) is all I can say, well...excusing the first 10 seconds when I got lodged on a tree in the lake  :embarrassed: but after that was very happy  :}

She is planing nicely nearly two thirds out the water (not quite full throttle) - OK, I know she is running just her shell....but once finished she is gonna be running just right  :-))

So onto your question, well after a 20 min run I bought her in and probably good job too, if we had a camping stove we could have made a brew down there !!! Boy was she hot  %% to the point you really couldn't touch it.

So to answer John - Yes, off this afternoon to purchase water cooling kit coil !!

Glad he didn't do too much damage to his boat !! I do like to test and test, before fixing everything into place finally just for that reason  O0 .

So cooling to fit and some painting to do so will update all again soon !!

Thanks John, Yeah I'm pleased with the way she goes !! Planes really nicely  :-)) :-))

Not much progress to report on really.....after the test run early in the week the water cooling has now been installed and all electrics have been glued, screwed and stuck in place !!

Happy with everything so far so will see how work on the hull progresses over the weekend  :}

Well, slowly in between the showers the sun has shone, so on with the painting....all at varying degrees of primer, 1st coat or second coat  !!

Drying in the sunshine now but will be back in the garage tonight as rain is forecast so that will be fun with the door shut  {-) %% {-)

Will try and get some more pics taken as she comes along !!

Hi Ken,

The teeth are actually a direct trace and hand paint from the black and white photo actually, I did look around but couldn't find anywhere. I also tried cutting from stick sheet but wasn't happy with them. Hand painting not the best, I suppose I could have tried masking and spraying but I'm happy with it for what she is.

Cheers

Not really much more to report on, progress is as you would expect !!!

Feeling slightly happy the pile of "finished" fittings are beginning to outweigh the pile of to do !!

Cab is taking shape...mast, glazing, rain shiled all to be finished and added prior to sorting rigging out !!

Getting there slowly, will try and get some more pics up soon !

CJ I am so sorr to say this but you have a Major problem with your Motor set up PLEASE oh PLEASE get rid of the spade connectors on the motor and solder the wires on properly,it is NOT good practise to do this at all,I have seen many a model stop in the middle of a lae as the spades have got hot and they have come off the motor .
