Hi nige1958 ...progress is  :-))

Back on 21st June you talked about a robust rudder arrangement & showed twin servos for twin rudders & using a Y lead for balance

Is it difficult to get the initial balance correct?

Whilst we understand a turn to STDB would place the STDB control arm in tension.......but at the same time, the PORT control arm will be in compression

Will there be any potential for the PORT rudder control arm to twist/flex?  <*<

....and lastly how do plan to seal the deck planking?..... ;) .....Derek

G,Day Derek.

In answer to the points you raise.

The rudders have independent servos linked by a y lead to one channel. The control rods form the servos to the rudder head are made from 4mm piano wire so no chance of flex as the run to the rudder head is quite short. Connection to the servo and rudder head has been made using aircraft ball joints bolted, soldered and screwed to the piano wire.

As for the deck I have not decided as yet on the best method to seal it. I will experiment on some decking made up off the ship to see what gives e the right sort of finish. I am thinking of using some clear marine varnish with a matt finish and maybe using tea to tint it slightly.

Have you any suggestions for me??

Bit more progress with superstructure

Detail painting commencing. I have taken this decision because the camoflage pattern is complex so adding all the superdetailing would make it impossible to get the line demarkations straight. The turret in the photo is Anton the forwardmost turret

Been a while since my last update. Frankly the camoflage painting nearly caused me to chuck the whole thing in the bin !!!!
On the forward superstructure I had to strip off all of the railing I had glued to the sides as I simply could not get any straight lines. This was a real pain as i couldnt get the studs out and had to sand the whole thing back to the plastic and start again.

When I fiited the funnel structure over the plan I found that the side sponsons carrying the range finders were almost double the dimesions they should have been and the 105mm twin mounts did not fit on the deck space so had to strip all the handrail off and re model them. Not happy !!!
Fortunately the hangar proved to be my saviour and i was able to progress this without any changes.
Well
Here is progress to date which is almost exactly where I was 2 weeks ago

hangar structure is substantially complete

Just waiting for all the minor armaments to arrive with other deck fittings to crack on with superdetailing now. Hopefully they will inspire me to go to the next stage.

Superstructure progress so far
Funnel structure now substantially complete apart from a bit of painting to be done to barrels and railings.

Hangar structure he same with boats needing to be detailed and fixed into place. A few handrails to be finished off and then paint to be touched up.

Forward superstructure needs the side railings finishing off. Portholes to be sorted out and more detailing to be done so some time away from completing.

Thats about it for now.

Been busy making the quad verling 20mm mounts and the 37mm mounts.
Pictures here from my reference book of what they should look like.
20mm quad mount

37mm twin mount

This is what I was sent by the fittings supplier for the quad mount. The 37mm mount was so bad it could not really be photographed as I destroyed it in protest

This is my version of both mounts
20mm quad

37mm twin

I need to add a bit more detail to the 37mm but they look pretty good in 1/128 scale.

Have started work on the hull camoflage. I have used the 1/350 scale tirpitz colour scheme as a pattern to gauge how to lay the scheme out and of course the superstructure parts to match it up. This is very much a first coat and will need rubbing down and touching up to finish off. The difficulty is to get the off white white enough over the grey undercoat.

I am pleased so far. The SWMBO has said it has to go back to the workshop for crimbo though.

Enjoying this thread and love seeing how your superb work is progressing. Have learnt more from you about how to plank a deck than I have from any book!!

Cheers Boathound !!!

It definately was a learning experience for me as well. I could not have done it without the support of other forums. Thats the bonus with these sites. You pick up skills and techniques from others willing to share their experience for free.

The build has come to a bit of a standstill at the moment because the workshop is so cold. I am cracking on with a 1/350 build of HMS illustrious with a type 45 and Type 23 in the same scale. Dont normally work in this scale but space and time are restricted at the moment so just keeping my hand in.

Hi Nigel, how is your Gneisenau going?

I have enjoyed reading your progress and seeing ideas for things like the planking and laminating lime strips for awkward shapes.

I hope it didn't best you as you were really well on the way.

Hello Nigel, I hadn't seen this post before and only caught it as Ballastanksian raised the question over any finished photos, I also would love to see how she turned out as she was shaping up to be a cracking build.
I'm also planning on a "what if " build using a fleetscale 1/128 Bismarck hull to produce a 1/144 scale H class which I'm going to call the "Friedrich der Grosser"

back in June 2012 you posted some very good detailed shots from a reference book, can you tell us what its called, by whom or even the ISPN number?

Much appreciated if you can.  Chris

I did look back through his R&D posts here and found the reference book;

A guy in the states (paul hammerness) on this forum I believe wants to buy her but am a bit worried about shipping it all that way. Anyone got any knowledge of how this can be done and the prices involved???

Don't mind selling things I have built as that is what I enjoy doing rather than sailing them.

The parcels of fragile resin models my colleague ships out are well wrapped in bubblewrap and packed well in a stout box.

In some ways a model ship is like an egg. It has a hard outer shell that will be cracked by being impacted or badly distorted and the model has the double risk of gun barrels and masts etc getting broken off in transit.

I would strap the model to a simple cradle that has some thin cushioning, then make sure the bottom, sides and ends of the hull are surrounded by foam and bubble wrap so that it is firmly in place but knocks are absorbed by the bubble wrap and impacts by the foam.

The inside of the hull should be carefully stuffed with bubblewrap. You could put the turrets and guns inside as well, suitably wrapped like you would china in a box when moving house.

If the Masts and director towers are removable then wrap and box these separately. putting them in your main box.

You will probably have to make your own box as the model is quite long and I can only imagine a Christmas tree or some furniture coming in a box of the shape you require. Large white goods boxes would provide good cardboard, and I suggest you double wall it so that you get a good resilient transport box to resist all sorts of imaginative stowing onboard truck/aircraft/ship.

I can forsee the cost being quite high especially if you quote for extra insurance to make sure compensation can be claimed. Take photos of the model and packaging to show you made the effort even if someone along the delivery chain didn't.
