« on: June 12, 2012, 10:02:12 pm »

im weathering my new sub and feel its going brilliantly just came from my 1 to 1 lesson with ubn and feel have made a good start on one side      the paints i am using are humbrol matts 147,86,33,62 and a humbrol clear colour 1322

the black 33 will be used for dry brushing
the  grey 147 to  cover up muck up
the brown 86 will be a wash / dry-brush for the decks to show the wood shining through
the 62 for the general rust
and finally the 1322 clear color which will be used to build up rust around the edges

pictures tomorrow afternoon kk

Hi there KK. How far away from you is the Fratton bargain shop, or is it still there? You should be able to get a jar of paint from there called "breakdust" it is what the model railway modelers use on their rolling stock. Excellent colour, just like rust.
Cheers.

When I added the weathering to my X craft, I put it outside my workshop and covered it with steel wool, nuts, bolts, in fact anything metal...then left it out there in all weather for a couple of weeks or so. After that, I brought it inside, and from at least six foot away, gave it several light coats of an aerosol silk varnish to seal all the naturally formed rust onto the hull.

'er indoors thought I'd gone mad, but I liked the effect it gave.

Oh man cant wait to see this sun on the lake, always loved the look of  the u47s  :-))

Could you just not put aload of metal shaving on the sub then duck in the salt water and leave it for a few hours to dry?

Better still, buy half a pound of nail's, put them in a tin can with some water. leave for a couple of months. Give the can a shake, take out the nails, let what's left in the can dry, and then brush the powdered rust on too your model. Drust we used to call it.
Cheers

Ok, I know this is not a sub, but a target! I have just started to weather the destroyer. I know that some bit's need to be toned down a little, but for a few hour's work, I think that it will be ok. KK, How are you getting on with the weathering of u47? Some one told me a long time ago, that rust is a living thing, you have to think about all of the differnt stages. Pop down to Portsmouth harbour, there must be some thing there you can have a good look at. Hope this helps,
Cheers.

always check your reference material before passing comment on others work. Or failing that, pop down the Camber Docks for ten minutes and look at the state of some of the fishing boats, and they only journey into the Channel, not the North Atlantic.... :-)

quite possibly ,remembering the vessels surroundings , and the crossing it was making during its service period , as allan has sugested , go around to the cambers and look at the states of the " local " fishing fleet , make notes AND TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS  for future reference on weathering rust !

Well, it went on the water at our display last weekend, and you know what? It didn't sink ( mind you it didn't submerge either, but that is still to come. ).

Hi KK

I'm just interestested to see what you do and how it all works out.
Just do it at your own pace and in your chosen way and I'll keep looking into your thread.
I hope it all works out just the way you imagine it.
