Quick RIB
« on: June 14, 2012, 07:21:40 pm »

I wanted a small rib for the stern of the prototype 52 ft Arun ( 50-01) I have been building on and off between my other builds and yesterday came across a suitable candidate at a local car boot sale. It is a rescue boat from a series of toys called Animal Hospital (not the Rolf Harris series!!).

The whole thing was stripped down to just the hull, the moulded ropes and paddle sanded off and then given a coat of grey primer.

A new floor was fitted along with a bow spray cover and the whole thing given a coat of Lifeboat Orange. A few detail parts were made, grab handles,  fuel tank, tool boxes, RNLI lettering added and it's now ready to sit on its cradle at the stern of the Arun behind the superstructure.

Now there is a good idea,I also have one of those somwhere in the attic,so will have to go exploring. I also have a Brittains model somewhere, that is made of a rubbery type material, with a moulded outboard on the back.I will investigate that also!

started doing my conversion today, with exactly the same animal ambulance.I won't be anywhere near as good as Mike's,but it will do for me.Nearly fell over backwards when I went to Halfords to get the spray paint..how do they get away with it? Ah well off now to sand out some of the paint runs ,I will get used to spraying one day!

I "collect" things at car boot sales that will be "useful" in my builds, even if I don't need it at the time!!

That's how a metal barrel  from a 1/16th scale German Tiger tank became the steering wheel support for a Watson class liifeboat, and it works. :-))

I went the ebay route, it took only a couple of days, and it cost me less than the petrol to one sale would have done. :-))
I go to car boots sometimes but have never once seen an old unloved boat waiting for me to come along<:(
I seem to imagine battered Africa Stars and Magga Dans always just being sold the moment before I get there {-)

Love the conversions guys. So much in fact, that I've acquired one to play with too.

I'm in the process of dismantling completely so I can see what's hidden away where little fingers were never meant to go. I've also found that it is made not to be parted, however, for the benefit of anyone else who wants to dismantle and adapt one of these RIBs (or SIBs if it is going to be a Y-Boat), heres what I've found.

The coloured seat/floor assembly is held in place with two self-tapping screws and a concealed fastener. One of the screws is quite obvious, as it holds the vertical driver support about 20mm forwards of the transom.

The second screw is a bit sneaky. It is sunk into the base of the seat-box and then the head is is hidden by a flush fitting cap - if you don't find this fixing and/or don't undo it, you will put a hole through the bottom of the boat when you attempt to prise the seat assembly out  %)

The third fixing is a sliding-clip keyway-type thingy concealed in the bow. You don't need to do anything with this one though as it is released when, having removed both screws, you lift the coloured seat/floor assembly slightly and then pull it backwards.

I think the boat may be a tad smaller than a 1:12 Y-boat (possibly 1:13 to 1:14), but I haven't found consistent Y-Boat specs either!
Anyway, the measurements are -
Length: 240mm (9 1/2")
Overall Width: 110mm (4 5/16")
Inside Width: 53mm (2 1/8")
Tube Diameter: 27mm (Not incl 1mm rubbing strips)

Now then, where's that filler...

Andy

Dave, check out the Small Tamar thread (also by gribeauval), where he has added a piccie of the rattle-can he uses. http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=39523.0 You can also find them on eBay.
