Fairey Huntsman in build
« on: June 14, 2012, 10:13:10 pm »

Well I suppose its time I put a small blog up for my Fairey Huntsman build. I was hoping to get this to some form of running order for Mayhem weekend, but sadly failed ... roll on next year :-))

I remember building one of these based on GRP when I was younger and enjoyed it a lot, no idea how I coped then as I feel like I'm struggling at the moment! I think I'm putting too much thought into it  8)

This kit was supplied to me from Stavros as a wooden hull only kit.

Loving the full size version of this boat I wanted to try and see if I can stick as close as possible to the real thing's setup by incorporating twin motors, 3 blade screws and rudders. If it fails then I will learn by the process and make any changes.

As you will see from the pics below there is a lot of cosmetic work to do. I have a nice fresh colour scheme planned once the tech and mechs are finished.

Any comments welcome.

Nige

Current setup is:
2 x 12 pole 12vdc motors
Action P94 controller
FrSky TFR6 7ch 2.4Ghz Receiver FASST Compatible
Twin rudder
2 blade plastic 55mm props (will try 3 blade brass at some point)
2 x 11.1v Li-Po batteries supplying 11.1v in parallel, I do plan on tryng 22v depending on its performance during trials.

Some new pics of todays work. Unfortunately, there was more work than expected and I didn't have enough time to put the unit on the water for its maiden run.

After a drive down the coast to Stavros's workshop (AKA North Wales Model Boat Builders  %% ) the propshaft stansions are now in place ... Stav spent a good few hours building them from scratch, fitting them and fettling the shafts to remove vibration ... BIG THANKS TO STAV  :-))

Also, had a chance to run the motors at full speed and see the mixer in action. Decided to switch from Mode 4 to Mode 3 allowing for each prop to reverse appropriately when turning.

Looking forward to seeing how it performs on the water now  :}

Yes it does Ken it was it's first time on the water and Nige was nervous of how it went he tried it on 11v for 2 Min's and soon changed to 22v boy oh boy what a difference needs now some trimming and fine tuning but basically it is there.I will now have to practise my video taking skills and ready up the Manual on the Canon 7d as it was the first time I had used the video in it,I think you have to manual adjust the focusing on it which I didn't know about so it's research time and also find out how to reset it to take lower resolution and the upload time to U tube As far to long due to the size of the files

Cheers  :}

Obvously the paintwork needs doing hence the silver tape on windows and primer paint, trying to get the mech and techs done before that.

As Stav said, first run was on 11v and it was poor. Latest video shows it on 22v and performance was better than expected on the trial props.

Quite a few questions answered today to help me progress with it. Motors definetly need the cooling hooked up. Another 2 LiPo batteries to allow for the 22v and maintain the longevity. Needs a bit more weight in it. Mixer is very sensitive so some adjustment needed there.

Yes, I thought it was impressive.

I'm following your test runs with interest as I'm after some speed records with my Fairmile D. I've never had a  "fast"  boat so it's a learning curve for me.  Who better to follow than 'Speedy Stavros'.

You talk of cooling. Is this the tubes around the motors type of system ? How is it done with the self priming type of cooling please.

regards
