Loyal Class Tender New Build
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:25:42 pm »

Some years ago i stupidly sold a much loved model of a Loyal Class Fleet Tender which I'd bought already build from a fellow boat builder. From the moment I helped load it into the man's car i instantly regreted selling her  <:(
Luckily I managed to buy a new kit from Model Slipway (2nd to last one!) a year and a half ago and the following pictures are my attempt at a worthy replacement to the one I once owned...

Rather crude jig made up for white metal soldering the liferaft supports. Some extra life raft containers I vac-formed as I'd made a poor job of building the included kit versions.

Started making some scratchbuilt wheelhouse instruments. Ships rowboat taking shape and starting to look the part though more details still to add.

I had the exhaust funnel made out of fibreglass and done away with the kit supplied vac-formed funnel. I plan on installing a heated smoke unit so thought the idea of a fibreglass funnel made more sense!

Thanks Dave. I've done a fair bit more than when these were taken so hope to take some more pictures over the weekend if the rain holds off  :-) And hopefully on a better quality camera too!

Built a light up working radar monitor with a transparency slide graphic. I was all set to fit until I was given some detailed pictures of a Loyal wheelhouse which doesn't have this style of radar monitor...oh well! Isn't it always the case though, you search and search for reference material and find nothing, then as you've gone with what you think should be in there you end up finding (or being given in my case) some super detailed photographic images and start ripping the model to pieces again!

Here's the semi finished rowboat tied down with waterproof cover folded back. I've added a few things like rope and bucket to make things look a little more interesting.

More sections completed (although not completely happy with the colour of the orange/red so plan on repainting)

Beautiful crisp clean work. Excellent. Are you going to be weathering this one?

Very impressive job you are doing there Voyager. I'm enjoying  'seeing how it's done' properly.

More details please.

Hi Voyager,

I think your new build of LOYAL MODERATOR is a more than adequate replacement for her sold ancestor.

I am absolutely convinced that your rebuild will be miles better when once finished then the regretted loss.

So no time for regrets anymore. :-))

Thanks John. Only very subtle weathering, mostly on the winch and anchors but she's staying mostly shipyard fresh.
