Anyone got this pillar drill...
« on: June 17, 2012, 08:26:06 pm »

I've picked up a (cheap) pillar drill at a local junk sale - it's a little 'Performance Power' 250w one that they used to sell at B&Q. Model number NLE250DP. It works, but the belt clunks a bit, so I wanted to adjust the tension, etc

Trouble is, there's no manual, and this drill is no longer being sold by B&Q (who have no support for it). There doesn't seem to be a web site to download the manual from either...

Has anyone got one of these? And if so, can they tell me how the tension is set? Or, better still, scan the manual in and email it?

Ill stick me oar in about the pillar drill, no i dont own one but i know me machinery. usually theres a canopy on top that open up to reveal two stepped pulleys. the tensioning is usually done by loosening and adjusting the motor.

Thanks, Mike.  :-))

I found that out, and found a thumb-wheel which seems to adjust the tension. At that point I wanted to know what tension to set it at, and there I came unstuck...   :embarrassed:

if i  remember rightly you check the tension by twisting the belt. its tight enough when you can turn it 90 degs no more no less.

That would be pretty loose for a smallish drill like this. But it's always useful to hear about mechanical rules-of-thumb...

If it is a "V" belt not particularly tight as long as the belt is in good condition.

to be honest i cant remember for the life of me where i learned it :embarrassed: I think it was at college doing mechanical engineering and machining. It was for pillar drills, well the larger pedestal drills to be precise.

Also the same nethod is used for testing automotive V belts (alternator/Power steering/AC pumps etc)

Use about one half inch of deflection per foot of belt. Also as Mike said twisting it 90 degrees , which is a sense of feel you develop over time. Mick B. PS = Too tight can be very hard on bearings.

Slip AND stall? Impressive!

I was just looking for any tips that there might be in the manual - If you have one are there any points you can make about it?

Thanks for that - it looked as if it would be ok for small jobs, and the chuck didn't wobble - so we will run with it and find out how it goes...  :-)) :-))

Try these DG :-  http://www.grizzly.com/manuals.aspx

Most of the Chinese equipment is the same design with different paint jobs and sellers labels, might have yours in these.
