Hms Nubian
« on: June 15, 2012, 04:16:09 pm »

Hi any body built the deans marine Nubian kit?

I would like to know if the original vessel had stabilising bars on the hull.  My boat sails well but on turning under speed the deck almost becomes a wash.  The model plan does not show fitting of stabilisers although there are guides on the hull for fitting.

Has any body any thighs please!

A very nice looking model - My first ship (Leopard) was at portland on workup with Nubian and I think Eskimo late 62 early 63 - they were totally
different from other types of ship of that period with the turbines and helicopter and 965 radar and basically a flush deck look.

I built one years ago. Hated the kit, but the model sailed well even under power turning. Is the weight too high?

If she's heeling over that much she's either too top heavy or you're going too fast in turns imho. My Tribal doesnt heel over that much and doesnt have the bilge keels fitted.

The kit if it is a Deans Marine Tribal has marking for bilge keels, not stabilisers whether the original Tribals had them or not.

My Tribal heels quite a bit in a turn but not as much as to a point of no return.  It looks pretty hairy but very stable and replicating in the bath tub pushing her almost to deck level with the water she immediately springs back so I have never had any concerns.

Hi Kev, having seeing her sail through some of the wake,s some other fast boats make ( dont know who,s)
I dont think you need to worry.

But as a precaution I would fill her with swim noodle foam as much as I could.

I built this as well and had the same problem (pictures on this site). Being a single shaft vessel all my electrics motor, battery, receiver, Rx battery, ESC are on the centreline. this gave it very poor transverse stability. My solution was to epoxy some torpedo fishing weights either side four in all spread longitudinally so that she sank evenly on the waterline, but spaced as wide apart transversally as possible right in the turn of the bilge.  She sails a bit lower on the waterline but not enough to repaint it. It solved the problem and she is very stable. Another solution would be to have to two battery packs, eg 7.2v packs  side by side.

Thanks for all your replies chaps!

Thanks for comments on how she looks.

I know my boat is well ballasted mainly with the batteires for working bits and a little lead.  There's no problem with it capsizing as in bath test she roles upright from around 60 degree angle.

I proberly am going to fast when turning, just did not know if keel over was right when in turn as at slower speed she's ok.

Thanks again
