Help on Building Engel Akula
« on: June 24, 2012, 06:09:49 pm »

Hi Folks,

I am new to boat modelling and recently got an Engel Akula kit as a present. Very impressive kit indeed.   :-))

I have managed to cut open the various flood vents using my Dremel (tough job for a beginner, took about 5-10mins a hole and not perfect  :embarrassed: ). I am now trying to fix up the rudders and propeller and and is wondering if there are any tips or tricks to doing it? In particular, I am especially concerned if the rudder/propeller holes are distorted/slanted and could affect the sub's performance and/or internal connections.  :((

1. How could I ensure that the holes are drilled correctly? Any technique or tools to use to ensure alignment?

2. When epoxying the rudders together and to the hull, should the epoxy be limited to just the contact points between the parts? or should I apply them outside around the surrounding base as well? (I am using the Slow Set - 30mins Epoxy from Mercury Adhesives - http://mercuryadhesives.com/images/Bottles/group-800.png).

Any kind experts or past builders can help shed some light or advise for a newbie?

Many thanks in advance!

1) best to redrill the hole straight and trough. Use a piller drill and a vise to hold the rudder.

2) Use CA glue to glue one rudder to the shaft (you really need a thin CA for this as tight fit. I would deviate from the instrictions and fit a collar and grub screw to the othe rudder for easy adjustment and servicing.

Thanks Mankster for the advise!

1. Good idea, but I don't have these equipment with me (only a Dremel and B&D). Let me hunt around and see if any workshops can help with it. *fingers crossed*  {:-{

2a. Just to clarify, I suspect I had used the wrong words (sorry newbie :P). I was referring to the rudder "carriers" for the Akula (e.g. http://www.modelboats.sk/Home/modely/Libor_l/akula_K-317/image115.jpg) . From this diagram (http://www.modelboats.sk/Home/modely/Libor_l/akula_K-317/image122.jpg) it seems that there is alot of epoxy(?) outside the carriers - hence my original query whether is this a best practise or does it suffice for me to just apply the epoxy "inside" inbetween the "carriers" and the hull. Can I also use CA (e.g. M5T thin viscosity adhesive - http://mercuryadhesives.com/products.htm) to attach the carriers or is epoxy (Slow Set - 30mins Epoxy from Mercury Adhesives - http://mercuryadhesives.com/images/Bottles/group-800.png) still the best choice.

2b. Would you be able to elaborate further regarding your suggestion of using collar and grub screw for "the other" rudder?

Thanks again!

Those pictures show filler to blend in the gaps, not epoxy.
Ignore what I said about the the collars, in the Akula, you should have a collars (on the push horns) with a grub screw on the inside of the hull and yolk to connect the top and bottom rudders and for and aft plane. In some subs both planes are connected to gether with a straing glued in shaft which make aligning the planes before the CA glue dry a little tricky!
