HMS Crane-build log
« on: June 24, 2012, 07:41:16 pm »

Hello all,
For my 12th birthday I got the VERY basic structure for a flat iron gunboat.

Here I am Starting to put together the frame by spotting on super glue as if spot welding.

This is where the boat is now after me cutting some more bits of balsa for more strength.

I am considering whether to keep the boat as it is meant to be, or modify is to a sort of futuristic space marine model, making my own way through the build.
This is the web address to the site where we bought it from:
http://www.trapletshop.com/product.aspx?c=3540
Take a look please post comments.

Good luck tj will follow you posts with interests. I also have this model in my stash a christmas present from my wife. I'll be building mine as she's meant to be. Looking forward to seeing what you go for. Putting on my warhammer hat i secretly hope to see what a space marines heavy bolter bombardment vessel looks like on the water

good luck

Part of me says it would be nice to see it built as HMS Crane but the other part of me says "dakka dakka dakka!". (And there are serious members of the forum wondering what we're going on about).

Look forewards to the rest of the build.

Hmmm....
Yes I think ill probably go with the space marine option.

Here is me putting on the first bit of planking.
I am going to put one layer of just wood then plank the next layer properly.
I am now wondering about how to power it. I want it to sail to scale ,but need a motor powerful enough to deal with the lake district winds.
What can you recommend for a 25mm 3 blade prop?

tj :-)

One of the magazines had an article about HMS Crane, I think it was Model Boats.  Usually they give a recommendation for the hardware you can use.

It was marine modeller international october 2011 the article recommends 385 motors with 15 amp speed controller no mention of prop size though but i would think something  like or eacha 25mm left and right hand brass props. I'm consinsider using 1 speed controllers for each motor and a mixer

I (aka Papa) shall chip in here just so as to keep track of what he's waffling on about  :police:  ;)

Thanks for the motor recommendations. The plans have the motors drawn in at about 500 size and state 25mm props. However, 385s will be satisfyingly cheaper...and I am going to try and get him to pay for it all himself.  {-)

In case you don't remember, pre-crash, TJ also posted his MTB build log.  I bought him this (without his mum knowing) as he'd expressed a desire to do what I did with models; i.e. make it up from scratch as he went along...hence the apparent Space Marine plans.

Well yes, I have decided (finally) that an ork model would be easier, as I all ready have lots of orks that I don't use to chop up.
Also I do like the idea of making a bridge out of scaffolding.

Here is my completely home built Cannon for the front of the boat. My dad came up with the idea of an ork sitting on it.
It is still in mid build, but as i speak I am painting it and will post more pictures when it is finished.

Thanks for the motor recommendations :-))
