connecting up two ESC,s to one Battery
« on: April 18, 2007, 03:19:29 pm »

Hi all.I am planning to connect two 15 amp Vipers to the same battery supply. The Esc,s are connected to the same Rx channel via a Y lead. I cant think of any reason for it to go wrong, but this is not my strong point.I would appreciate your comments please.

My friend Craig @ACTion told me once that using only one battery pack in this scenario is definitely not to be recommended, especially when using auto-setting ESCs. He did tell me why, but I didn't understand a word of it. I just nodded respectfully.......... ;)
Suit yourself.

PS Asking advice before you do something daft is definitely a strong point - don't beat yourself up about it, mate!

Hi Chromedome

I have two boats with Action mixers. The first one I made was Al Khubar, and I went with Craig's suggestion to use two batteries with the two speed controllers, which worked fine. My second is a Billings Coastguard Cutter, given to me by a friend, in a very dishevelled state. Not a lot of room in this, so trialled it with just the one SLA battery, and it works fine! The choice is yours, my friend!

I have two esc's on my Yamato, 3 esc's in Celestia and two in my southampton, each of them has just 1 battery,   however if you are doing what i think you are, and running them off 1 channel of a 2ch set, why not have 1 esc operating 2 motors?

it can be done quite easily

The only thing with multiple ESCs is the often-repeated truism that nowadays most ESCs include a BEC.  The BEC feeds a regulated nominal 5 volts to the receiver.  As the 5 volts is nominal, a discussion between BECs may result if more than one is trying to work at the same time.  This discussion can result in violence.
Easiest cure is to disconnect the red wire in the receiver connection of all but one ESC, and the best way of doing this is to gently press down the retaining tab and pull the pin back out of its housing, then insulate it with some sleeving.  This way, it can be re-used elsewhere.

Would it not be easier to run two motors with one controller and one battery as in my Robbe Scheutze.

IT sounds easier Richard, but it may compromise stearing, in that motors may be not exact clones!!

An electronic speed controller works using on/off pulses to the motor, if these pulses are a little out of sync with each other you will end up with the boat going fast - slow - fast - slow. :o
