Oh Dear!
« on: June 27, 2012, 10:52:23 am »

Nurse taking my pulse a few weeks ago noticed it was irregular.

Two E.C.G.s later I've been told I need a pacemaker fitting!
- it seems the heart wiring is a bit knackered.

I've decided to go private this time, never have before -
always relied on the NHS, but getting a consultation in
six days time seems to be a lot better than waiting four weeks

I've been told not to drive until after the op so thats another
reason for getting it done sooner rather than later (it feels
like losing your right arm not having any wheels!)

Anybody got any thoughts / experiences on what I'm likely to experience?

Anybody got any ideas on what the fees might be? - not to the penny
but are we talking £5,000, £10,000 (or more?)

PM me if you wish privacy

Regards

Richard

Well,

I was going to get my hip replacement done privately and the surgeon said it would cost in the region of £15,000

So thought sod it, i'll be in pain for 5 months.

There are some excellent machinists on here maybe one of them could knock you up a new hip so you only have to pay for fitting lol :D

Richard my wife had something similar happen to her a couple of years back and also needed a pacemaker fitted.
She had seen the consultant privately which got her further up the queue but had the fitting done at the Specialist Heart unit
in Newcastle under the NHS. Depends on the problem with your heart as she was not required to stop driving.
She suggests you check the DVLA website about restrictions on driving - she had to inform then that she had had one fitted
but had no other restrictions placed on her driving - BUT from what she could remember if you had any blackouts or dizzy
spells whilst driving you were usually temporarily not allowed to drive.
I know what you mean about not driving - just had a hip operation and they automatically ban you from driving for 6 weeks

Oh, i had it done in October 2010.  ;D

To answer the question and having a quick look on google, you will be looking between £9000 & £15000.

Supposed to only cost the NHS £4200...

Whilst i dont wish to start a mayhem argument here, I actually wasn't automatically banned when I had it done.

My hip replacement came as a result of a serious life threatening work accident 2 years its prior and with the nerve damage caused in the affected left leg, I could only drive an auto from then on.

When i spoke to the surgeon about driving, he said you can drive whenever you want providing you feel safe to do so.

I think the 6 week thing for the hip is conditional of first of all leg affected, and secondly if you drive an auto because in a manual of course, you may need to react quickly to get to the clutch etc..

I had my hip done on the Thursday, the Monday i was out and by the Friday, I had no pain at all. I was 25 when I had it done so maybe its the youth thing.

After a HEART problem Richard, the insurance companies decide that until a month after and on the advice of your Doctor, you're not fit to drive.  :-))

Quote
Richard my wife ?

Amazing how a bit of punctuation changes the meaning....
try "Richard, my wife ?"

Thanks for the comments - w/r to the driving, my condition apparently
warrants immediate suspension from driving. I haven't actually had any
blackouts or dizzy spells

The comment from the doctor was along the lines of "you could have heart
failure tomorrow while you are driving so we must suspend your licence" and
followed it with "You'll have to wait four weeks to see a Cardiology Consultant".

Doesn't there seem to be some inconsistency here? if I was really that ill shouldn't
I have been in an ambulance and off to hospital sharpish?

A nurse at my drs surgery gave me an Ecg, I then received a phone call from my Dr saying that I could be having a heart Attack so to get to the hosp pronto, he phoned ahead and a bed was waiting for me. After tests it was a false alarm.
The moral of this is, Get over to the Hosp and tell them about the ECG results.

Best Wishes,

Len.

When I spoke to the surgeon about driving, he said you can drive whenever you want providing you feel safe to do so.

I had my right knee joint replaced in June last year, and I asked my surgeon the same question. He gave me a similar answer, adding that the standard answer is 6 weeks, but it depends on physical condition before the operation. He told me that, because I do a good amount of bike riding, my legs were quite strong for my age, and that I should be fit to drive in 3 weeks - which I was. The main condition was that I must be able to walk without any aids such as a walking stick etc.

To be on the safe side I rang the insurance company, and was told that they had no rules regarding driving after such surgery but, should I have an accident and they discovered that I recently had the replacement, they would check with the surgeon if I was cleared to drive. I had been told that, when I felt OK to drive, just notify the surgeon's office and they would note the fact in my file, which I did.

Total cost of the op was about A$18,000, of which I paid $600; the rest was covered by private health insurance.

The news is a bit better....

The earliest a Private Cardiologist could see me was next Tuesday.

Yesterday afternoon I got a call from the local NHS Hospital - I have
an appointment with an NHS Cardiologist this morning @10:30.

Not so fast for the OP ! - this is the NHS after all!   (private's probably the same).

First you have to have an assessment [/Cynical mode ON] then if there's money in the kitty you can have the OP [/Cynical mode OFF]

I've got to go back Monday to have 3-Day ECG scan kit fitted - now when I had the 24 Hour ECG - they said not to
bathe/shower for the Duration of the test  (NHS electronics not properly waterproofed unlike ours Eh? ;D)
If its the same do with the 3 Day Scan then, by Thursday every b*gger is going to be stood upwind of me!

I'll keep you posted - The Cardiologist did say that I would definitely be having one fitted. -

If its any cop I'll pass the circuit diag. on to Dave at ACTion, and then you can all have one.   :D

Hey Richard, When you get this done, is there any chance of radio interference? No good if you start running when the power stick is pushed forward!!!! %%

Apologies for the delay in replying... quite a lot has happened since Friday, none of which I could have predicted..

I had left it in my last post, that I would be going for a 3-Day ECG on Monday the 2nd of July - well ...
I began to feel really unwell around 10:00pm Saturday night, and following the advice received from the
cardiologist during  Fridays visit, I dialled 999. Briefly after the paramedic turned up, closely follwed by an
ambulance I was off to Hull Royal Hospital A and E - I spent Saturday night there before being moved to
Castle Hill Hospital Cardiac Ward on Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon I was fitted with a pacemaker, and here I sit at home, with a left shoulder
that aches like h*ll, but thankful that the NHS has come to the rescue.

It has all happened roughly within a week of being told that I needed a pacemaker !

It will be all R and R now, for 6-8 weeks roughly,  before I return to Castle Hill for a follow-up but I'll try
and keep you posted if anything significant happens l

I have to contact my car insurance people, and the DVLA but if the Doc says its OK I'll be allowed
to drive in a weeks time.

Richard

p.s. thanks very much for all the best wishes - they were much appreciated.
