PAS/RMAS Sea Giant
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:17:12 am »

Does anyone know f the Sea Giant,or her sisters,Samson or Superman have been modelled by anyone. I would like to find enough info to possibly make one myself-the layout of the towing deck, with its deckhouses, winch etc are not easily deciphered from the few photos I have seen. I am looking for photos, plans of any of these 3 impressive looking tugs.,either as models or the real thing.
Thanks

Afraid my pic of seagiant is a bit blurred but here are some of her sister ships. I can just rememeber Seagiant at the Silver fleet review, it is where she rammed the jetty when racing a local tug in for a berth, she had a new bow fitted at Rosyth then sold off about 6 months after that. Contact the Plymoth RMAS Association, you may get more pics of the Samson from there, as for plans, Shipmate 60 might know more as he was at Bath HQ, when the RMAS was privatised, heard all the library of plans were then burnt.

Thinking about it, probaly find the Confiance hull from models by design might probaly be okay to use, as they where the follow on upgrade to desiel from this class.

Thank you so much for these Dodes, they are all new to me-the first is a beaut and the crew/bridge front is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find, but for the other end!
Sea Giant,Samson or Superman would do,though I think the previous Nimble class probably closer in hull/machinery than the later Confiances. Nimble class pics thin on the ground too, should anyone have them.....
I'll try contacting the RMAS,don't hold out much hope of plans though, but asking on forums seems to be the way to go,as.like you said,so much has been destroyed in various office moves or closures.
Cheers.

Thanks for the additional info. Yes,I have tried posting on shipnostalgia too, there seem to be quite a few ex RMAS,even ex PAS on there. Less so SD,but I assume because they are not that well liked (?) as a company-but that of course was long after the Sea Giant and their like were in service.
Thanks again

Thanks, I'd seen that one,a nice picture. I had contacted one of the posters on there, and was told that several photos came form a book on Malta tugs-I ordered a copy from navybooks.com and am quite looking forward to seeing its contents.I think it is by a Michael Cassar, who has published several books on the RN at Malta.
cheers

Could be a bit of a red-herring, but the last time I encountered this class of tug was in Capetown. Late 60s, early 70s. Perhaps they still have one. Ideal for the weather in that area. Try Googling Capetown Tugs. BY.
