THE YEAR I WAS BORN - MOTOR LAUNCH
« on: March 05, 2007, 11:10:59 am »

Hi everyone

No doubt a lot of us modellers have things lying around.  Plans, half finished kits, etc., the "Things I would like to do shelf - if I get time  :D"

Well, Ive had this plan knocking around on my shelf for a long time - this belonged to my dear old dad.

Anyway, Ive decided to build it - and try and stick as close as possible to the instructions and plans.  Ive decided after a long and hard discussion with myself to deviate on materials used in the plan and construction of it.   I have used light ply for all the frames, whereas in the plan it quotes 1/8th wood and also double diagonally planking, instead of using thin plywood skin.

In the article - and this is the bit I really like "A Model with very pleasing lines, "Patricia" will provide joy for many a youngster and also for those not so long" and this is what I am thinking "With remarkable turn of speed from such a comparatively small motor, she will go skidding over the water with ease" THIS I MUST SEE.   What I have to try and source now is a mighty miget motor.... so here are some pics of my build so far  :D

Hi, BlueBird,

I was reading your post and read that you wanted a "mighty midget" motor?
Don't get too excited as I made a big mistake with what I read. I thought that you wanted the motor of a 'mighty midget -- welding set' Lister 3 cylinder diesel, weight about 200cwt.
My mind went into overdrive as to the turn of speed and me wanting to look at the build pictures, Oh well my fault for dreaming

BlueBird,
I think I have a spare Mighty Midget motor.
Give me a few weeks when I return home on leave properly.
If I have one spare you can have it.

Hi,

The deck was made using a combination of mahogany strips with lime strips standing on edge between them. The Mahog was 2 mm thick, so i used lime 2mm wide by 1 mm thick on edge. The whole lot then had lots of sanding and 7 coats of varnish.

Good luck, any more q's i can try and answer, just ask away.

Hi all, these plans and the magazine I am going to send to Martin (as long as he promises to return them) because, I know where he lives  ;)

thank you for your kind comments, but, please bear in mind, that I have deviated from these plans a little because I was inspired by certain peoples' builds on this here forum.   I substituted plain plywood for mahogany diagonally planked and also, the decking.  This isn't mentioned in the plans, as its just plain old plywood.  There are also several other deviations which I have made whilst building this model  ;D to accommodate modern day technology and materials and oh yes, I did give it a coating of resin.   I did, however, want to try Full Leather Jacket's method of tissue and dope on the hull skin, but, I wasn't sure whether the grain of the planking would show through.  This method is yet to be tried by myself, but possibly I will try it on another model.

Thank you all for your comments.

Looks a treat, John. Did you get the cassette motor from ACTion, and was it the larger of the two types which he sells? I await reports of its OTW performance with interest. I could offer my services to redraw the plans on CAD for distribution to those who can use such stuff.
BTW I would NOT recommend using dope and tissue on a hull where you want the grain to show through. I'm almost certain that the tissue would obscure the grain. I would probably have used about N squillion coats of thinned polyurethane and half an acre of 800/1000 wet & dry paper, but I do like suffering for my hobby............ ;)

hi there FLJ -

Have to say I did not purchase the cassette motor from ACTion...it was a motor I salvaged from an old portable cassette player.  In bath trials it moves the boat quickly - in fact I am frightened to take it to the lake: because;
a) conditions not very good weatherwise - blowing a gale and snowing at this moment
b) Im afraid in case a one legged duck outperforms it; we just havent got the power Captain - major rethink like you suggested earlier  ;D because, the actual size of the boat = it would have to be perfect conditions to be used on the open lake.   No doubt if we doubled the size of the model and maybe obviiously you could increase the motor size and electrics inside - it could no doubt be made into a good performance boat.   It now resides on the sitting room table - my wife is waiting to plant flowers in the centre battery compartment  ;)
