  ...Hi Portside II...

You don.t happen to be a mind reader in your spare time,Thats exactly how I was planning to fit my identical crane into one of the pair of barges that I built last year...

I was thinking of making the box that the crane sits in, removable so that the barge can also be used as a flat top...I also have several other cranes & excavators at 1/32 scale for my other barges...

I will post some pics when i  have finished....

Yours looks brilliant...

thanks Norry
i don't want people thinking were psychic but the base where the crane sits is removable as to make the deck flat .
will post some more pics with paint on soon.

down in the shed the other day and i had left the crane switched on, i turned the TX on and not realising the crane was on pushed the sticks forward and the crane made a bid for freedom up out and onto the rear deck , :oops could be risky if it was on the water :-[

does any one know what freq these cranes operate on? this one has 5 channels ,one for each track ,slew, Derek and the other one ??
yeah bucket up,down, left, right, forward, reverse X2 and jib up and down

mmm
To prevent this problen in the boat there are two options.
1. Put a slightly raised floor in the center of the box, 2mm deeper that the dstance from the bace of the crain to the botom of the tracks. This will make a slight gap between the tracks and the box bace so of they do run they will "spin" in mid air and not move the crain.
2. Put a small discreatly hidden Dubble pole switch in the bace of the crain. Cut one of the wires to the motor conect one end to the center pole of the switch and the other wire  to the other contact of that pole. Do the same for the other motor on the other pole. This wil disable the motors temeraraly whilst the crain in in the model. then just flick the switch over again to re-enable them.

...Hi portside II...

I am planning on putting a very thin sheet of plastic over the tracks like a lid on the box with a round hole in the middle for the centre of the crane to pop through..It should look as if the crane is attached to the barge & not on tracks...

I was thinking of removing the tracks to cut down on traction & covering the controls on the handset with something so that i cant make the tracks move...

I have the box made & sunk it  into the deck of the barge...The crane fits perfectly into it...I have also trimmed away a part of the crane at the foot of the derrick so that it can be lowered a bit more...now to find a way of lengthening the derrick cords so that it comes right down...
2 extra 2" Bilge Keels will be fitted  along the bottom length of the barge for extra stability when the crane is turning round...A 6 volt gell cell stored on deck in a model container for easy access  will replace the wee 7.2 volt crane battery for extra running time... I just hope it all works...

I will post some pictures when I have finished the job...

There is another possibe issue with crane tx. If the crane is made in China it is probaly on 27mhz. If it isn't ignore me.

So if the boat Tx is 27mhz you may get cross talk with at least one channel.

I has someting similar in our pond with 3 cheap chinese RC boats running together.
One of them was jammed out.

What running gear are you using single motor twin rudder or both twin???

just an idea you could change the bucket for a grapple and use it as a rescue boat ;)

Cheers for teaching me something new ;D

Could you not fit it out with radio gear for use in case you get into trouble???

The barge would look nice behind my Ryhope ;D ;)

fine thanks Martin ,with this test there was 3x4pint cartons inside for ballast and with the jib slewed and dereked fully down (i think thats the right terminology) there is little tilt even with a bucket of water it's good ,although the crane is not strong enough to lift it .

while most of you were at the Mayhem weekend i was down at the goole /M.M.M. open day having fun ,slipped the workboat into the water and let the lads have a tow .
had it out this weekend 2/6/07 and had a go with the crane pulling a few bits of weed from the pond that have started to grow ,sory no pics but it performed great .
next time me thinks i will try with some buy's dropping them off and retreving them en route .
