Bandsaws
« on: July 14, 2012, 11:32:06 am »

Hi Folks,

I'm after buying a bandsaw for around the £200 mark and want something half decent. I plan to use it for mainly wood, however some brass work may also be needed at times.

I've been looking at draper stuff with 100mm cutting depth, 250mm throat and tilting bed (0 - 45 deg).

I'm also after something variable speed.

Can anyone suggest some products please?

Dan

Hi Dan....first of all you want a two wheel one that will take a blade of around 104- 108 inches long.
If you go on ebay and have a look at Elektra Bekum saws....you couldn't get better second hand.....german build, can buy spares easily on the net ( not that I have needed more than a single capacitor in the 19 years I have owned mine, and they give a fantastic straight cut, plus they have a mouth of around 10 inches for a deep cut and a "gate"...of about 12 inches from the blade to the upright..............

I cannot say in simple words how good mine has been....chopped everything from 0.8mm ply to 8" thick tree logs, it is so good......and a blade will cost about 6 quid inc vat.

Sounds OK that one.
Why is all the good stuff so far away when it's collection in person?

Ive got an Axminster that looks nearly Identical to the EB in the above link, And Ive never been happy with it. Yes it will cut, but the play on the top guide is too much to maintain accuracy.
I suspect it is built to a lower grade the the EB, but just something to look out for. actually just made another post that has the top half of it in http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=38260.0

When diesel was a tad cheaper, 2004/5, i went to Grima in Germany, near Colditz, and Leipzig, to collect a 1/6th scale model Tiger,...and even after i deducted the cost of the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, then the cost of fuel for the 800+ mile round trip from Amsterdam to Grima and back again,..then back to Newcastle then another 180 miles to Scotland,... i still got a bargain, so you see Ned,if its a really really good deal its worth going for,...but sometimes its not,

Something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Elektra-Beckum-315-bandsaw-/290741498004?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item43b18b3094 then?

Dan, if you are going to bid, I'll stay away as you found it :-))

However, if you're not going to bid for it, can you say so please, as I'm tempted myself.

They are good saws although it looks as if something is missing from the side of the table, either a guide or some in-fill pieces where the extrusion is open at the end.
I've got a Draper and it's pretty average, also a very old Dewalt D100 which is good for an old girl but lacks power. Recently replaced them with a used Dewalt 738 which is a great saw.

They save hours of cutting, worth every penny but setting up is crucial to keep a straight cut and like everything you get what you pay for.

Don't buy one without the standard straight fence which you sometimes see and a proper mitre fence is really useful as well.

roger......it's the end cap which you take off by loosening 4 wing bolts to extract the blade....but it's there on the middle picture..you can just see one of the wing bolts sticking up in the air to the right of the picture at the back of the table......these saws also have a tilt table so you can cut to 45 degrees.

Cheers Neil, it just didn't look quite right but I see what you mean.

They are good saws and were on my shopping list when I bought the Dewalt 738, it's just finding the right thing at the right time in the right place for the right price and this looks like a genuine buy.

Think i may have a bid on it to be fair, see how far the price goes.

Dont have an awful lot to play with to be honest.
