cleaning up small brass fittings
« on: July 16, 2012, 11:04:03 am »

Hi all, I am finishing a Zwarte Zee (Billings) started 30 odd years ago and passed on to me (free) and I am at a stage where I need to prepare the brass for painting.  I am trying a concentrated effort on building, have given myself til the end of July!!!.

There are over 300 items including 150 odd stanchions about 1/2 inch high and with 3 holes for the rails.

I am thinking of a liquid that I can put in a jar and put the fittings in and shake.

I was then going to spray an etcher on and then spray paint.  The stanchions to be constructed with rails off boat and sprayed before fitting.
The other items to be hand painted.

I have made lots of models but all these fittings are a little daunting!

Any tips or hints please will be very welcome.

regards to all, Roy

I know the brass loco builders use mr muscle oven cleaner in a plastic bag to clean parts after soldering, needs to be rinsed thoroughly afterwards tho

Citric acid will do the job. Get it from a homebrew outlet.

coca cola!!! it works!!!

Also works as an engine degreaser, and will even remove oil spots from your driveway.
Sadly the cheaper "shops own" colas are not as effective

How about combining the wife's ultrasonic jewellery cleaning machine with one of the above liquids?
