What is this wood supplied for planking ?
« on: July 13, 2012, 07:28:45 pm »

Hello.
This is the planking supplied by Panart for the planking of my Vaporetto hull.

It would be of great help if anyone could identify it as I may need to source more of it.

Yes, I could use a substitute but it would be nice if it could be identified.

If it's of any help the sample on the left is Limewood, (Basswood), which is a soft creamy colour, the middle 4 are the supplied planks. 45 in all, they have the same smell and grain pattern

as each other but vary quite a bit in colour, from a yellow to brownish gray.

On the right are a couple of lolly sticks for comparison, I believe these are produced in huge numbers in Finland from the Pine grown there, maybe Gary, (VisuVesi) will be able to elaborate on that.

Here is the picture, let me know what you think please.

BTW the photo should have been rotated 90 degrees to the left, my error.

They look to light for Mahogany but they could either be Oak or Teak

LB.
I did think of Obechi for the yellow ones but they all have a continuous grain along there lengths ( 1 Mtr ), even the grayish ones, don't think Obechi has that, also, it bends quite readily along it's length and becomes quite pliable when soaked in hot water.

Could be tho'.

Hmm, great link Stavros, Poplar seems to fit the bill.

But, you may be right, could be stuffed.

As a last resort I will default to using Limewood, that's Goodwood, (sic !!)

Obechi seems to be the one then John.

Looks about right, thanks, and thanks everyone who  replied.

Horrible stuff that Obechi, used to crack and split on my skinned foam wings, ( aeroplanes you know ).

Cornwall mention lime and walnut for the model. The paler samples don't look fine grained enough for lime, they give the impression of being a softwood - possibly spruce?

Why not contact www.mantuamodel.co.uk - they are distributors of Panart models and sell a large range of strip wood. They should know what the wood is.

Obechie used to be the weapon of choice for Aerokits stringers though Manogomy seemed to rule for Billings planked offerings.

As mentioned previously, Mantua usually use Walnut and Lime. The Lime seems to vary from creamy white to almost green depending on batches. That would be the likely candidates for the model. as mentioned, Mantua Models in Windsor sell the timber.

I've built two models from this company HMS President and HMS Racehorse - good kits for the money, many hours of 'fun' planking.
Lime and Walnut are the woods used.

Thanks guys

Definitely Obechi, sands leaving white course dust.

Had some Obichi left over from when I built model aircraft, self same stuff.

Now I can make the replacement planks that were accidentally stood on and broken.

Many thanks for all of the replies.
