24h Record attempt
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:45:29 am »

According to the July Marine Modelling Int'l, the record distance traveled in 24h for an R/C power boat is 121.6 miles. The record was set in the UK in 2002.

Apart from the mentioning in the GBoR, there's precious little info on the rules and regulations of such an endeavour:
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/records-1/greatest-distance-by-a-radio-controlled-model-boat-in-24-hours-%28rc%29/

Who knows more?

hi there

If you can email Riggers from this forum, I do believe he has some information/or did have some information with regard to the 24 hour endurance race - if me memory serve me right on the 'old' old model boats forum, there used to be a discussion which went on about organising and running an event - and I think Riggers may have been involved.   Check that out.

if so, and there is a new one going to be organised I am interested = but me wife says if I can keep awake for lenger than 12 hours she will eat the cats bed  %%  but, having said I will somehow get the Leeds Castle overhauled cos she was built specifically for a 24 hour endurance race..........

Hi Ned,

I'm also reading 'conflicting' information on the boat that's being used, unless there are going to be more teams running, there's also talk of using a model of the HMS Daring, 1/32 scale (4,8 m long), and a twin hull jet driven boat.

I'd like to know if there are pitstops allowed for refueling (battery change), or does the model have to carry the powersource for the entire 24 hours?

Regards, Jan.

Alan is giving updates on his build log for the Wildcat boat that he is planning to use for the record.  See http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=37017.45

The DARING T45 wouldn't meet the Guinness rules because it is powered at 36 Volts and the Guinness rules only allow 24 volts and 32 Amp hour capacity at maximum.

Battery changes are allowed providing they don't take too long and no other maintenance apart from clearing any weed from the props

There used to be a seperate category for the distance on a single battery charge but there doesn't seem to have been a go at it since the early 1990s

Hi there

Are you sure about the amperage rating for the Guinness Records?

Cos when I designed me Leeds Castle's battery compartment - it was to hold 3 x 12 volt x 14 amp batteries, giving a total of 42 amps and I know at the time this was within the Guinness Rules for a run without any battery changes.    Mind it might have changed now.

The 32 Ah is for the runs with battery changes and I have a copy of what Guinness sent me for the HMS GLOUCESTER run in 2002 that says that - and Alan has had the same from them for his attempt.

After the 2002 event and its reporting in MMI, I had a letter from David Holland who was based in Doncaster and he reckoned he was still the holder of the non-stop record with his trawler Margaret H which he limited to 24V and 32Ah.   At the same time he said that there was no Ah limit on the runs with battery changes.

I did try to clarify with Guinness about all this but they took ages to answer anything so I left things where they were once I got the certificate for GLOUCESTER - they never actually printed it in the book though!

I hope Allan gets some better weather for his attempt.

I will try and find the information on the rules/info, I received the information via eBay when I bought some plans on HMS Leeds Castle. I do have three photos showing a 1/72 Leeds with ABCO ltd on the side and a sign for Bury Metro Marine Modelling Society in the front, what I can remember is

1.The model can not be taken out of the water for either the non stop endurance or the pit stops
2. 5 minute pit stops every x number of hours (think it was 4)
3. Scale size was restricted.
4. Once the endurance started you couldn't touch the model.

Like I say this is from memory, I will see if I can find the info.

Forgot to add, the Anglia model boat club were going to stage a 24hr endurance in July of 2004. The contact there was a Dave Jones, he may have rules for the event still.

With todays tec and motors, batterys, this should surely be beaten?

Sharfts with bearings, chargers that make full use of the batterys, hull design ever better, todays supper motors  %%
