new springer-cat build
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:25:59 pm »

Hi Guys, I liked my first build Springer so much I decided do build another one.
It is different in the fact I have made the hull 1" longer & 2" wider and twin hull
So it ( hopefully ) does not dig down too much. So I can rescue boats quicker.
I have 2 model motors direct 555 motors & 2, 777 motors.
I intend to run 50mm props. Tornado 50a ESC
Has anyone used these motors or know what amps they draw at 8.4v

Not as yet Russ, I will be posting some later.
I am only at hull glassing stage at the minute. Its plywood
I gave it a coat of resin, then close weave mat and 3 more coats of resin.
Just the wonderful job of flatting it all off now.

After reading some of the mixed reviews concerning MMD 555 & 777 motors
I dont think I will bother with them and I will look for an alternative.

gday john , motors , you will find w 777 on 50mm props the Amps draw will be high, the 555 are a loverly motor , but onlly 4000/5000 rpm ,will drive 50 mm props , but not a lot of HP in reserve , i like the 555 ,in a slimmer hull , will go all day on one charge .
I stroungly recommend a 545 motor , running through a tooth belt g/box , 2.5/3:1 reduction , this will drive up to a 75/100mm prop , in my super springer , im fitting twin jaycar 545(2718) w 3:1 t/belt transmission , turning 65 mm brass scale props , this will provide enough thrust to water sky behind hull.
in Australia we are very limited to what motors we can get

Progress so far.

I havent decided what superstructure to use yet. Perhaps a Sea Helper workboat or something like that.
I dont think anyone has done that version yet.

I ended up using 2 540s that 6705 Russ had spare.
They are not fast so should be o/k.
First trial Wednesday.
The rudders need finishing and the finish colors apllying
some more finger plate and job done.
I might add another esc and have the motors work independent.

Hi guys, the springer cat had her maiden voyage on Sunday she was excellent, instead of digging in on full
forwards she started to plane, which my fellow boaters thought was brilliant.
The maneuverability was very good indeed.
Arrow5, her stability in the rough water was a lot better than the mono hull, she just bobs up and down like a cork.
I will post photo,s after Wed, sail as I forgot my camera on Sunday.
