I've heard of it done, but the receiver must be a BEC unit, and it wont provide enough power to drive more than a couple of small servos, why not use a voltage regulator off the main battery, would be even smaller and you will be supplying the correct voltage.

No Gordon, your receiver is made to run on 5v-6v supply only, 9v will knacker it.

As stated above get a BEC unit/voltage reducer from Action, component shop etc.
connect the red & black to your main battery, upto 24v I think, (I will be corrected if I
am wrong),and plug the outgoing 5v wire into the battery connection on the receiver.
job done. no worries, you dont have to remember to charge the receiver batteries ever again.

If he's running an ESC with a BEC built in, he doesn't need the RX battery.
There have been reports in the past of running RXs on PP3 batteries, but I would regard any lack of disaster there as just dumb luck.  It does say on the label "9 volts" which is a lot for a system designed around 5 volts.
If its a small model with tight space, what is the voltage of the main battery?  If he's only running 4 cells, just run the RX direct off the main battery.

If the size of batteries is the problem, why not try the AAA ones,  holders for those are also readily avaible, and with them being that lil bit smaller, might just do the trick.
they come in decent amp rechargeable also these days

* could even solder them to make whole package smaller

Gordon, try these Guys
You will find what you want at the right price and if you order
in the morning its next day delivery.

I have no connection with these guys except for buying all my batteries
from them and I am well satisfied with the quality and service.
Also if you give them the dimension of the battery space they can make one to fit.

A small 2 cell li-po with a U-bec %)

Actually I have run my Footy on this exact set-up no U-bec, standard servo and mini servo all running off 7.4 V. a 500 mAH li-po has about 4X the capacity and 1/2 the weight in a smaller package.

Just to show how small everything is, Unfortunately the boat had a terminal shelf incident so no longer sails.
