Fuming with rage! hotmail hacked
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:14:11 pm »

Some time between 2am and 9am this morning my hotmail has been hacked and I can no longer access my email, I have been going round in circles all day trying to restore my account, to no avail. I spent an hour on the phone (number from google) talking to a bloke with a funny acent whom I thought was from Hotmail helpline, I only endet the call, after a bout of good old British swearing, when he tried to charge me 109 quid. after several more failed attempts to restore my email, I am now told that I cant try again for 24 hours, very cross, I want to chop the perpetrators ****'s off! Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you resolve it?
Many thanks,
A very angry Nick >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( <*< <*< <*< <*< <*< >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( <*< <*< <*<

Yeah my old hotmail is locked and need to access it in order to change it on a website i use...

Input the info required i.e old emails, msn contacts and what not - "sorry can't help ya"

its an absolute disgrace. Not sure of my next steps Nick to be honest.

I've not had this problem myself. Also, I'm on a different mail provider to yourself however, have you tried resetting your system to an earlier "restore" point ?
I don't know if this would be the answer but I guess it's worth a try...

Regards,

Ray.

Hotmails online based..

Literally being locked out of the account can't be resolved on your pc unless you know the password.

Costs to run hotmail through windows mail as far as i know. Wouldn't necessarily stop a hack anyway or being locked out.

Tried all that, it even said that my phone number was not a valid UK phone number, and that my mates email address was not a valid email, very frustrating..... <:( <:( <:(

Type "hotmail" into your search engine.
This should point you at this page -
https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=11&ct=1343246235&rver=6.1.6206.0&wp=MBI&wreply=http:%2F%2Fmail.live.com%2Fdefault.aspx%3Frru%3Dinbox&lc=1033&id=64855&mkt=en-us&cbcxt=mai&snsc=1

Just below "Sign in" it says "Can't access your account?".  Click that and you get a page that leads you to the forgotten/not working page which starts you into the change password route.  As long as you know the name of the account and some security details, you can get your account back.  Having more than one mailbox is a GOOD THING - in a situation like this, they have a way to email you.

I have been using Thunderbird for quite some time now, ever since MS created the mess that is Live, and anything that I think might be in any way important I move or copy into appropriately named local folders, so they are on my machine, and backed up, not at the mercy of who knows who out in the cloud.

late edit - Has your phone number changed since the account was opened?  House move, change of provider, area code change etc?  Did your mate give you the right email?  I ask this because a hand-written email address is the single most error prone piece of miscommunication in human history.

Hi Malcolm, I have done all that to no satisfactory result, I copies and pasted my mates email from another email account, I will just have to wait 24 hours now and see what happens......

I must assume that what has happened here, has in a way happened to an old friend of mine,i was at his house the other day,and asked him if he,d gotten the link that i sent him,he told me that when he tried to read his emails, the language had changed, and he could,nt read anything,i asked him to show me, and when he went to his hotmail it was indeed in another language,...Czech to be more precise, his name was at the top right of the page, but all his emails are now in Czech, everything else on his pc is in English, %% %% %%
btw, i,m not trying to hijack this thread,

If someone has hacked your account, its likely they have changed the password to access it or, corrupted it so nothing works. If you have tried retrieving the password via the 'forgotten password' link and that doesnt work either, then Im afraid the chances of getting into the account again are somewhat lessened.

Leave it for 24 hours as is and try 'forgotten password' link again. If you still cannot access the account, you'll have to set up another account.

IMVHO, dont use web based mail accounts for anything important. Because they are free, the level of support for them is not a lot and security far too easy to bypass.

Having an "offline" email system like Thunderbird can be just as dangerous if you are not backing up your files regularly.

There are good and bad points to both systems... another bad point of offline email systems is that you cannot access your stored emails from another computer.

If you are using one of the online systems then make sure you keep your personal details up to date and change your passwords regularly.

Another top tip.
Don't use the same password for everything

If there is any members on here with emails from you that also have a hotmail/live/msn email account they can help as well:-
select an email from PettyOfficerNick and then choose mark as, this will bring a pull down list where you can select My friends beens Hacked

How did they get your hotmail password? You weren't asked to re-validate your hotmail account asking for your details incuding password on a very official looking e-mail from MSN the day before you were locked out?

It was 2 or 3 years ago that hotmail's database was hacked, and a range of user names and their passwords were grabbed.  I got my pre-warning when Martin asked me why I thought he, of all people, needed viagra.  That was just a change of password to cure things.  Last year, I started getting invoices from iTunes - it turns out that some Swedish layabout with a taste for strange music had mis-spelt his e-address, that was resolved fairly quickly.

I haven't a clue how they got my password, I don't answer or even look at 'official' looking emails, they are put on the blocked senders list or marked as phising scams as a matter of course, in all personal stuff, bank account etc, I opt out of email and text alerts, and insist on letters in the post. So my password must have been obtained by other means, still very cross, and will attempt to recover this eve.

I once found a virus whilst running a check in safe mode - previous check in normal mode didn't spot it - might be worth a try?
Only ever had two pc viruses but boy can they disrupt your day.
Are you all sorted now?

I heard that they are being loaded into free phone apps too - very expensive hijacks

Thunderbird is not an offline system per se. It's a mail handling program - what the external system is capable of and how Tbird is set up determine whether it is 'offline' (by which I'm assuming you mean it sucks the mail off the net completely and stores it on your PC).

If your ISP offers e-mail it will often be POP in which case mail can be left on the servers (setting in Tbird). However if you use more than one system to access the account strange things can happen. If you can get it IMAP gives better flexibility. I have an inexpensive paid hosting package that includes e-mail and I have converted all our accounts to IMAP. This allows complete synchronisation of mail between any number of PCs (using Tbird), smartphones and tablets (using their own mail packages) - plus I can access it as webmail with just a browser from any PC (though remembering the passwords I've set would be really tough - they are secure :embarrassed: ).

As the e-mails exist in many locations you don't need to back up - but if you delete on one device that will eventually delete everywhere (but use a deleted folder so you can get it back.)

My sister got caught with this a few months ago, the really stupid part was once we got through all the rubbish of proving it wasn't a spamming account, it then asked us to change the password which would be sent via text to a mobile phone number, and on the next page asked us for a phone number to send it to, no security questions asked, anyone could have had the new password sent to their phone only needing her email address. {:-{

The worst part of all this is if they used your account to send spam mail, you may have been black listed by some servers.

Would second getting a virus and malware scan (I use AVG & malware bytes).

Good luck with Hotmail's helpline. :-))

Thought it was Buckie up your end of the country Wullie. Been waiting about 4 days now for Hotmail to verify my information, the automatic reply to my recovery form said 24 hours. there doesn't seem a way of emailing Hotmail directly, only the recovery form and every time you fill it in you go to the back of the que. I've now signed up for gmail, but all my contacts are locked up in Hotmail.... >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
