Tweet, Twitter, and All such else irritating...!
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:44:34 pm »

Dear All,

I don't know whether I am alone in this, but I will have absolutely nothing to do with any of this nonsense.

Firstly, it compromises security, and, Secondly, it compromises security, and I will have nothing to do with it/them despite my PC having every precaution (LOL!). I have a v.good eng., and he advises keep away unless via an independent designated machine with a separate Server acct..

Am I alone in my thinking???

Regards, Bernard

... and this includes Skype... something I am under pressure with now due to much/many overseas comms. - which cost me an arm and a leg over, but at least with the good old fashioned 'phone', we have some sort of security... or not!!! Don't think MI6/5 will have much interest in what type of concrete does what, and which type of rebar and mesh does this that and another, but it will justify their existence by keeping a watch all the same! I have no problem with this I add, good thing, only those with anything to hide have something to worry about!!! Regards, Bernard

I will not touch these so called 'Social? site like Twitter and Facebook. I find the whole thing ridiculous and childish. Just look at how many idiots get themselves in trouble for saying stupid things. Some even get arrested for causing upset! Skype, now that is different. A marvel to me. I live in Spain but have a Manchester phone number. I use a normal handset and family can ring me at local rates and I can ring them or anyone else in Europe for nothing. Well not quite, I pay 2.99 a month for the privilege. It works beautifully and I have had no security problems with it in more than 3 years.

Like Footski I'm very grateful for Skype, as my son and his family, including my young grandson, live in Tokyo and without Skype I'd know very little about their life. As it is, with Skype I can virtually join in family meals and see my grandson grow up, sharing things that he does out there and, during the Tsunami, was able to offer support and information from outside, while it was all going on.

All new technologies take time to find their place in society and many were terrified of phones and their effects when they first emerged... I'm a Luddite in many things but the advantages of computers and some of the modern applications, far outweigh their disadvantages, to me.  :-)

Have to say skype saves me a fortune in phone calls and have never had any issues with it... been using it for about 7 years now

My wife and kids use facebook but I agree as to the amount of time wasted on that site is amazing!

After letting a young lad have a sail of my marblehead the other week, he asked me about facebook

him: Are you on facebook?
me: yes
him: What's your name there?
me: I cant remember, I haven't used it for ages

he looked confused for a moment

him: so how do you talk to your friends?
me: I ring them or go to see them

again he looked confussed for a while, then shook his head & said

YOU ARE REALLY WEIRD!!!

I had to laugh  {-)

My sentiments,also,...facebook and the likes, are an easy way of staying in touch with friends etc, who, live on the other side of the planet, but like most younger people of today, they are on it night & day, talking to their mates who might live around the corner,....and as for those that text whilst walking and not looking where they are going,..its only a matter of time,....i,ve had a few near collisions, whilst driving, with, texters, and when i hit them with the horn,i invariably get a mouthful or the finger,,and on one or two occasions, its been "watch where you,re going you old so & so,"

Look how the teenage world ground to a halt the other week when O2 had an off day! You could see them all walking around outside mobiles held up in the air for a better signal.

I'm like you mate, and signed up for a Skype account over 5 years ago when I returned from the states. I have a Liverpool number and keep in touch with old sqn mates and peeps I like to call friends in such places as Spain, Vietnam, Florida, Illinois, France and even Wolverhampton (eh Nige ?)

I ditched my landline ages ago as I only ever used it for incoming calls, and most of them were 'solicitation' calls anyway !  Now peeps who matter have my Skype number and when I am out and not able to take a call, it's transferred to my mobile number which is PAYGO    simples.

I really should get Skype

I do have a facebook account but don't use it for socialising - sometimes it is handy for looking at something.
Twitter ........... oh please just shoot me first

Skype is great, and Facebook is good if it's used properly. My daughter who, with her husband and new baby, lives 1000km away from us, told me if I wanted to see regular photos of her baby I'd better join. I did, and now see our latest granddaughter's antics as she learns to crawl etc. It's also good for keeping in touch with some of our friends who we only see annually. I do not, however, post my every move on Facebook, unlike some people I know, who seem to post endlessly, even the most trivial things <*<

As for Twitter......forget it.

Peter.

Advice please.

There are 3 PC's in the Off. here, and it has been suggested to keep Skype on one only (for safety - and once I sanction it). Has anyone had any virus etc. problems with Skype???

Nope   none at all and many businesses are choosing to use skype nowadays ....mainly because of the free conferencing facility and the cheap call rates !

I'll put my "IT cap" on for this reply...

We need to clear up several things - notably about security and threats an such like through social media, etc.

Firstly we need to look at passwords. Any password that is based on sensible word from a dictionary is a bad thing to have. Particularly if you are not changing O's for 0's etc. The best passwords are random collections of letters and numbers that make no sense at all. Obviously this means they are hard to remember, but hey, you cant have everything.
Secondly we need to understand that using the same password, particularly if it is simple, is probably even worse than the above.
Thirdly I will assume that, particularly us gentlemen wont resort to using our "maiden" names for passwords either... Likewise don't use anything that can be easily determined - like street name or house number or daughters name or whatever.

I know passwords are hard to remember, so if it's really a problem go hunting for a password manager.

Next thing - can I assume we all have good anti-virus scanners? Anything is better than nothing. I'm not going to try to tell you what's best, but I do use AVG free on my home machines - it works for me. 'nough said...

So having said all of that let's look at social media...

Firstly and most easily dealt with is Skype. Having created a Skype account and put in place a strong password, all you will find by default is the testing user account that lets you make sure Skype is working. Note this next bit, because it's important - the only way to connect to people, or find people you know is by searching for them. The ease with which you can find people is based on the information they have made available in the Skype "directory" (for want of a better word) and this is the same for you. So if you don't want to be easily found don't put much information in. Rely on email or some other means to communicate your Skype ID to people you want to talk to. Even then you must request to connect to someone else - someone wanting to connect to you must get your permission to do so. So if you have no idea who someone is who is requesting permission to connect - DENY it! And if they pop out of the wood-work later as someone you know then it can be done again. Yes you can receive file transferred over Skype - but your AV scanner protects you from any threats there. I'm not aware of Skype being an attack vector for malware or anything else - Google is your friend for checking on this.

Twitter is a micro-blogging site and all our athletes are currently using or abusing it. Do I use it - Yes. What do I use it for - Mostly I follow other people, I don't tweet much. Who do I "follow" - Some Kiwi comedian's, the NZ AA, Topgear and associated people, lots of IT people along with @NewZealand and @Sweden and some other people whose names escape me right now. And HobbyKing. Why - because it's interesting and it allows me to interact with people who I would not interact with otherwise, and I get value from it. Do I consider it a threat or security risk in anyway - No - as long I don't tell people that I'm going away for a holiday for 10 days and my home address is blah blah blah.

Facebook. Ahh yes - the elephant in the room, the site where the rules change almost daily it seems and much may or may not happen. This is the hardest one to deal with. Suffice it to say that as long as you set the permissions about who can view what you post you are minimising the risks. Do I have a Facebook account - yes. Do I use it often - no, barely monthly. Note however that once again, Facebook has the "I-want-to-connect-with-you,-OK-I'll-let-you" paradigm in place. You don't have to connect with people you don't know or don't know well.

General advice:
You can be safe online as long as you understand the implications of what you are doing.
Don't share ANY information you wouldn't want to become public (like you address, phone numbers, email addresses, holiday dates, etc)
Don't allow connections from or connect to anyone you are not sure about.
If you are not sure - don't do it.

My thoughts:
There are risks involved with using social media, but as most people on THIS site are consenting, informed and mature adult's, I would expect that we would all be able to evaluate the risks and navigate the pitfalls without too many problem. Or ask, as has sort of happened in this thread.
Quite frankly I consider purchasing stuff online to be a greater risk than most social media. Umm - I take it that we would never, ever give our credit card information out on a URL that is not starting HTTPS, right?

Hopefully this helps a little. I've chosen to ignore the stuff about not liking various social media services - that's another "religious" discussion best avoided...

I don't find twitter a security threat, as 'I'm going away for a week, my address is Deansbrook House, Deansbrook Road, Edgware, Middlesex HA8 9BA, and the front door key is under the mat' doesn't fit into 140 characters  {-)
