Yet another topic I was reading has just been locked just as I was about to post

So I'll say this instead

There are about fifty boards other than Chit chat - it doesn't seem unreasonable to have one board for socialising

Maybe tighten up on it creeping onto other boards but let's leave Chit Chat Free & Open ........ no foul language or adult stuff - kids look in.

The boy at school who holds all the marbles can't play Ollies with anyone can he?

I go out of my way not to upset people ............. so don't get upset

Mayhem - including Chit Chat has brought me some new but excellent friends - Many of us could say the same.

Regards Dave .................. a bit of mutual respect is all that's needed.

I agree with your sentiments Dave but the problem is that there are certain subjects, politics and religion for example, upon which people hold strong opinions and which tend to generate intense discussion. Time and time again these topics degenerate into a flamefest with personal insults and strong language and I think it is quite right that they be nipped in the bud by the moderators. There are plenty of other places where views on these subjects can be aired but it was decided a long time ago that Mayhem would not be one of them.

Similarly, a fine line has to be struck with humour. There is always somebody willing to push the limits with something a bit risque and then somebody else can't resist topping that and before you know where you are things are well beyond the realms of family viewing. Unfortunately you can't have a situation where everything goes or that is exactly what happens. Regrettably a significant minority lack the judgement and self control to keep things on the straight and narrow which is why we have forum rules and moderators. Mayhem is in fact pretty laid back compared with many other similar forums in this respect.

Stormy Board - if so it would have to be age barred and guest invisible.

Personally I wouldn't ask for that because people might see it as a green light to post irresponsibly.
Here I'd just ask for Chit Chat to be moderated less - but in return for members show each other due respect - nothing unreasonable there.

Hi Colin - I am guilty of perhaps being a little risque on occasion and haven't ever objected to being moderated for that - I now reign my humour back so as not to upset anyone. Some (definitely not all) of the moderating just seems not always neccesary. I don't mean to upset the mods by saying that - and Ken will recall I actually asked him to moderate a particular thread recently. Perhaps it is offensive/agressive language that needs dealing with?

The is a stormy board on Ships Nostalgia that works very well but they have pruned it a lot sometime recently  and it has lost its way , but it was basically a freeforall but the membership didnt cause too much bedlam and again it was age barred but it allowed for somew free thinking

Dave, the problem is that not everyone is like you. The truth is that some members do not demonstrate respect for others and things just spiral out of control in no time at all. It takes very little to set things off. We have seen it time and time again and it has done Mayhem a lot of damage in the past. It's not a problem which is confined to Mayhem by any means.

Personally I find that strongly moderated forums are the best as members are not tempted to step out of line. Paradoxically that does seem to instill more mutual respect and politeness between members and keeps discussions more constructive and objective. Mayhem sometimes errs in allowing members to use it as a soapbox rather than as a means of rational debate. Obviously that is my opinion!

Hi Colin - Maybe it is the mysterious line that is a contributor to the problem. I ask for a freer debate but less tolerance to offensive or aggresive posts because that stifles debate - I just think it could work well.

Too true Dave - the mysterious line! Inevitably it varies from day to day and from moderator to moderator and maybe whether it is raining or not or if there is an R in the month. I'm afraid this is inevitable with this sort of forum which is run on an amateur basis by part time volunteers. I think you just have to accept that their heart is in the right place even if things go slightly pear shaped from time to time. The big problem is whether you try to nip things in the bud on the basis of previous experience and cause offence by appearing to act precipitately, or whether you cross your fingers and take a chance. Unfortunately the latter course of action has on several occasions almost led to the Forum being closed down so on balance I prefer the former.

If you look at it objectively, Mayhem is a model boating site and the model boating topics (which are what we are supposed to be about) very rarely cause any problems. It is the Chit Chat section where all the aggro takes place and that seems to me to be like the tail wagging the dog! Best to regulate the potentially controversial sections in the interests of preserving the value of the overall site methinks.

Just as some others, I sometimes think an age-restricted section would be a good idea, with 1 rule, don't get personal, with the thing being if you do get personal about people, you're simply not allowed to view or post in there. And as much of a good idea I think that may be, it wouldn't necessarily keep the normal, publicly viewed chit-chat section free from childish and bitchy behaviour. I used to frequent a bike forum, and amongst it sections was 1 called something like, 'at the bar' which was over 18's only, and had no rules, but the normal boards were the worst of any forum I've ever been on. Every single thread, within 2 pages turned into an argument and mass of personal attacks and threats.

So while on occasion the moderating can seem excessive (and I do agree there are times when I really wonder why something has been moderated) but simply giving a section to allow people to go silly won't necessarily clean up other sections.

PS, the thing most annoying to me about chit-chat, is that threads aren't allowed to wind on and evolve into different things, you must stick to the original topic. Some of the best threads on other forums are the 1's that go on for hundreds (I think theres 1 that's now been going for around 2800) pages, because the topic changes and it's more like a conversation than 1 single subject, it's when you really get to know people and feel like you know them when you finally meet in the real world.

I am of a like minded opinion,...of topics being allowed to meander where they will,...just like conversations when at the boat pond,or wherever,...you start off on one thing, and before you know it an hour or two has passed, and you,ve ended up a million miles from where you started,....its interesting, nobody gets bored, and like biker says by the time you,re finished ,its like you,ve known some of the posters for ever,.... :-)) :-)) O0

That really depends on the thread though doesn't it - name the part wouldn't benifit from straying too far off topic but for many others it wouldn't matter a jot.

I wouldn't mind this thread meandering as long as it occasionaly  remembers it's about enabling adult conversations and not stifling debate.......... and we'll have no discussion on that please {-)

I have to agree with Colin regarding religion and politics they are too personal and should not be discussed on an open forum, ( look how many wars have been fought and lives lost over the same subjects ), but anything else should be able to be discussed in the Chit Chat section only so long as it does not offend or insult individuals, I don't think it matters how many times a person replies to an individual subject it only goes to  proves how popular it is. I also don't think sub-sections would work because isn't having a theme ie - A Bit of Support for Chit Chat within the Chit Chat section the same thing?.
I don't normally get involved with this type of discussion I tend to stick to boat/ship related themes, I only replied because I felt someone was being picked on unnecessarily and wanted to add my support.
