Although I'm fairly new here I've been internetting for many years. Part of the problem is that people think this is a public place and/or a democracy but its not. Its the online equivalent of someone's living room and we abide by the house rules or leave.
Over the years I've seen forums come and go and the ones that last and are popular seem to be the ones with policies and moderation similar to MBM. So I figure that makes them the 'right' ones.

I do some times wonder if certain people on this model boat forum are genuinely and truly interested in model boats??  {:-{ as certain names very rarely show up on other topics other than chitchat

Very good point John. I am really surprised that some people appear to be advocating an 'adults only' section. This is a model boating forum for heaven's sake! Martin has always been at pains to insist that Mayhem is a family orientated site suitable for all ages and quite rightly so. If you want to argue about politics and religion, use strong language or swap smutty jokes then get your jollies elsewhere!

As for suggesting that people should be trusted to moderate their own discussions, yes they should but in fact they can't! One reason is that everybody's view on what is and what isn't acceptable is different. We have found this time and time again in the humour section. There needs to be a degree of external moderation, however imperfect, to ensure that a certain basic standard in line with the Forum rules and ethos is maintained and I don't see how any reasonable person could disagree with that.

Well said Colin.  Frankly I am getting cheesed off with the increasing volume of totally irrelevant and often personal innuendo clogging up this forum.
It must be putting off a large number of model boat enthusiasts.  I suggest some people might like to consider moving to Facebook.

Colin,
I agree wholeheartedly that a degree of external moderation is necessary to ensure that the rules of the forum are not broken or even bent, but surely the Chit Chat section is just that a section of the forum where anything even things that are not boat/ship related can be discussed , again without breaking the forum rules. As for using Facebook I am not one for using that sort of social media, I really enjoy this site because of my hobby and totally enjoy the build threads the help and advice offered and also the non-boat related themes that pop up within the Chit Chat section, it just adds to the value of this site where grown ups can discuss various and often diverse subjects without fear of ridicule or resent.

To the ‘friends of Mayhem’
– from Martin

Most of the 'rules' that we have here on Mayhem have grown out of gained experience, both bitter and sweet! I try to
take a pretty laid back / friendly / constructive approach to moderation on Mayhem,  hoping that all members are both
rational and adult in attitude.. Most members will have realised that I do allow discussions of a diametrically opposed opinion
and sometimes things do get heated beyond what I call tasteful and I or other moderators step in because we don't want
that kind of attitude in ' the Model Boat Mayhem clubhouse'.

But no matter how strong your opinion is, Mayhem may not be the most appropriate platform! I don't ever want Mayhem
or it’s members to ever look self-centred, arrogant, bigoted, xenophobic or a bunch of old farts.... how on earth is that
going to attract youngsters too our hobby?!

Those that know my "ethos" will realise that this site is all about, politeness, mutual respect, shared knowledge ….. oh! and model boats!
I basically judge a post by think how I would explain it to a 10 child, if I don't want to do that, I'm going to moderate it.

It has been suggested that the Chat-chat board is removed, as that is where 95% of the moderation, and subsequent
arguments about moderation occur. Rather than remove the chat board - other members have suggested that I simply
ban it's abusers. I am reluctant to do this…… but am considering it.

Kind regards and happy model boating!
 Martin

The way I see it we have several generations of modellers on here, all of whom have their own thoughts on what is "acceptable"

I think a little bit of humor does help to lighten the forum a little, but their are others who feel this is a model boat site and this is all that should be discussed and woe betide anyone who posts a witty comment in one of thier threads.

Me? I think on the whole the moderation on here has the perfect balance.  However in my opinion all of Olympics themed threads (positive and negative) seem to be moderated with an Iron fist

It all boils down to one simple fact...you join Mayhem, you abide by the rules. If you don't like it...well, there's plenty of other forums out there.

Unfortunately, even though the title of the "Locked" post was infact politically biased, it took 49 postings for the "Moderater" to moderate and decide that it was against the rules of the forum. Strangely enough, the most paddle bashing was done by someone who seems to think the title should have in its content something to do with toy boats. %%

As a grumpy old git I demand my say. Morrison pork pies are yummy. If you want a no holds barred site try OLLR (Old Leafsprung Land Rovers). U-33 just said the rest what I was about to.

I like Morrison's Pies but prefer the famous Clarke's pies. I do like their fillings and find them much more tasty. I do find they sell out quicker than other makes though.

There seems to be a bit of confusion in that people who are asking for a bit of moderation in the general sense are being taken as calling for a complete ban on chit chat and humour. That is not the case at all. I have no objections to chit chat whatsover but when it starts to dominate the site I think that you can have too much of a good thing. Mayhem should be a model boating site with a chit chat section - not a chit chat site with a bit of model boating appended!

Now,

Just look at the last few posts, this is what makes this site, the humour and wit, it just re-enforces what I said earlier.
Don,t fix what isn't broken.

Since retiring I have never eaten so much food.  Never seemed to have the time when working, so the discussion of Pies is soooo appropriate.

There is a huge difference in the tastes of the different makes that it is worth a subject for discussion. However, one has to be careful not to 'slam' the bad ones in public.  Clarks pies must be famous within 100 miles of Bristol and have been making them since I was a teenager. A complete meal in a mouthful for a growing lad. Mind you, the price has changed a bit since then.     {-) O0

Pies aside folks, I too think Martin and the moderators have just the right balance, Mayhem should not be used as a platform for political and religious argument, nor do we need a special ares for smutty jokes and adult content. Back to pie now, the pork pie, when properly made is a truly wondrous example pf the pie makers art! :-)) :-)) :-))
