What ever happened to Dave's original question & pray tell how the whole tread morphed into a totally different subject which if I understand correctly is not allowed on the forum & the moderators will generally put the tread back on track in no uncertain manner. Why has the rules changed so suddenly here ?. I feel we need some discussion on the subject of moderation in general in a non confrontational way. Like Dave I sometimes fail to see the reasons for what has been moderated. Like all things in life somethings tend to go too far before they are questioned & then the real problems start. I just can't understand how a serious question can turn into a joke about pies !. Mick B.

Mick,

Have had those thoughts myself but on reflection, it serves no purpose to know why a thread/comment has been moderated, as the saying goes "ours not to reason why but to do or die".

The commentator being moderated has gotten the details/message.

So we don't need to know or add insult to injury.

Nope - more like Picard than Janeway. Remember he was assimilated into The Borg .................. and for non Trekkies - The Borg are a collection of species that have turned into cybernetic organisms functioning as drones of the collective the hive.

How many mods are there? Is there a ritual to undrgo on joining? How does one become a moderator Ian?

Being a moderator is a thankless task. You are constantly and unfairly criticised by uninformed individuals talking out of their posterior orifices, so whatever you do is wrong - which in a convoluted sort of way indicates that you have probably got it right.

Moderators are appointed by invitation and usually accept only very reluctantly. If you would like to be a moderator then you are unfitted for the job.

Without a degree of moderation the site would rapidly collapse due to a minority being unable to moderate themselves. Maybe it could be done better. However, it is very unlikely that you could do it better.

The moderators give their time for free with little or no thanks so be grateful!

Also they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. O0 O0 O0 <:( <:( <:(

Rather than being critical/obstructionist we should be supportive and thankful for the privilege of having this forum.

To one and all, People, a Toast to the moderators, well done.

Like Dave I sometimes fail to see the reasons for what has been moderated. Like all things in life somethings tend to go too far before they are questioned & then the real problems start. I just can't understand how a serious question can turn into a joke about pies !. Mick B.

I sort of started this thread ............... well one called 'A Little Support for Chit Chat' after another topic got locked. I did it just to throw some light on objections to people using the board. Then the question turned to moderation but I gave up on that part as I was thinking I might upset someone. Some lads were joking about pies ..... and I didn't mind as that's why chit chat is a fun board - but then the topic name was changed and I felt straight away that that killed the original thread's purpose. Hey Ho not the end of the world.

But questions are strange things that have a life of their own and once asked - well they exist - as you have proved to returning to it after swallowing all that pie.

Here is what I last said to Peter Fitness about my question .......... in bold is what I object to

Hi Peter as I said earlier on ............. I'm not out for mischief so I have simply left behind the moderation question - but I have asked the above question several times - but so far no one has said here specifically why any members respectful posts on Chit Chat could be upsetting them in any way. I want to keep offensive posts out of this  because I am against them too.

I think it is another question I will have to give up asking.

Anyway Mick - keep swallowing the pies ......................

Dave
Just noticed some replies
Ken - I do respect you and I think the moderators generally do a good job. That last post was just meant to be light hearted - sorry if you took it otherwise.
Colin - I wouldn't be a mod for all the tea in China - I think you are quite right that I couldn't do it.

BUT let me say this last thing ................ the thread (see first post) was in defene of a board and about objections to it - only a few posts on this whole thread have been pertinent to the question.

Colin Bishop has summed up the moderator's role better than I could, but I will add the following. Mayhem is Martin's forum, he sets the standards and we, as moderators do our best to uphold them. If any drastic action is deemed necessary we will usually give our reasons but, we are not going to explain, or enter into debate, every single time we moderate, there simply aren't enough hours in the day. Because of the time difference, many problems have been dealt with by the time I log on, and I fully endorse the actions of the other moderators, not because we are a trade union, but because we are maintaining the same standards. Judging by the very small number of complaints we receive regarding moderation, maybe, just maybe, we are doing a half decent job, but that's for Martin to judge.

Obviously what I thought was a bit of humour  wasn't funny if you happen to be a Moderator
I APOLOGISE UNRESERVEDLY for unintentionally upsetting the mods ............... take the post down if you like

Please nobody else comment on this thread about moderation - the thread is about peoples objections to chit chat - or your pies

Respectfully Dave

Dave,

Aren't they the same thing.
In other words aren't the ones who press the report to moderator button also predisposed to object to chit chat themes etc,
Respect is a commodity that is fast disappearing as is commonsense.
After all if it, chit chat,  gets out of hand it needs moderation.
So there we have it the never ending circle or a round pie. O0 O0 O0

D'yer know....I'm beginning to suspect that the 'report to moderator' button is never actually pressed by a member of MBM in a similar fashion to 'disgusted of tunbridge wells' watching the WHOLE of a steamy film or drama and THEN complaining to the IBA.

That would be an interesting statistic, how many non-moderator hits on the button as opposed to moderator instigated moderations.

Sorry it's nothing to do with moderation or pressing the button and I can't talk about moderation

There are calls for chit chat to be closed. People asking for that are not differentiating  between respecable and non respectable posts - just chit chat as a concept.

I don't understand why (with 50 other boat boards to look at) any member feels the need to try and close chit chat

That's it in a nutshell and no need at all to include the moderators.

Dave

re replies - I have on one occasion asked Ken to moderate a 'boat topic' thread where I didnt like how a minor was being addressed by adults

There are NO calls for  Chit Chat  to be closed down.

I like Chit Chat as I'm sure does everyone else.  The subjects are great and stretch the brain with it's varied  and sometimes humorous threads.

All we ask is that the laws of England be obeyed and that public decency be followed with decorum and good manners.

To the ‘friends of Mayhem’
– from Martin

It has been suggested that the Chat-chat board is removed, Martin

    ok2

Sorry Ken - direct from Martin himself

and once again I agree with your last line - I can't make it any plainer that I am not talking about moderators.

OK, putting it that way, set up a vote if that be the case and if it counts/or is permissible, but my view/vote is that chit chat stays.

Mayhem is made up of the sum of its parts which includes chit chat. O0 O0
