Slugs
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:25:27 pm »

This wet weather has really encouraged the proliferation of slugs. Checking my front lawn after dark with a torch reveals literally hundreds and hundreds of the revolting creatures hell bent on eating everything in sight, you just wouldn't believe how many there are!

A bit of research suggests that a solution of household ammonia at around 1:5 dissolves the things.

No, nothing to do with model boats but when you shine a torch out there it's frightening!

Buy some old vinyl Lps from a car boot and lay them on a pebble or two under bushes and plants - generally out of site places.
You will find slugs congregated on them at almost your every visit. Mario Lanza is a firm favorite.

We have a member near Oxford called Slug - if you come across him please put him back carefully.

I`ve been buying Tesco beer at £1 for a four-pack. Give them a drink (deep enough to drown in) and they die a happy death.  Been playing hell with the Lady Muriels lupins O0

I used to do a lot of field target air rifle shooting.... we had a snail problem in the garden... with the french windows open it was exactly 25m from the sofa in the living room to the middle of the lawn.... suffice to say, a £1200 german target rifle is an excellent way of getting rid of snails.  :}

A few ducks work wonders on the slug and snail population and provide eggs at the same time!

I've got frogs large and small in my pond, and hiding
in the long grass at the edges of the lawns, and a
regular evening patrol of (at least) three hedgehogs,
so no slugs in my garden!

I've been wondering if Slugs or Snails would make bait for any fish?

In one word...yes. Carp will take both, as will eels and chub, in fact a large slug is one of Mr Crabtree's suggestions for a top chub bait.

How about... one of those 1/16th scale tanks that has a BB gun (possibly with a stronger spring) and a night vision video camera attached... that could be a fun way of getting rid of slugs and snails...  ;)

Well, I seem to be having some success. I have an electrically powered water pistol (originally bought as a squirrel deterrent) which, loaded with an ammonia solution, is remarkably effective although what the neighbours made of me lurking in front of the house at 11pm with a torch and handgun firing into the lawn I don't know.

And I bought some iron phosphate slug pellets and sprinkled them around. These little blue pills (not to be confused with other blue pills) are apparently irresistible to slugs which eat them, become sluggish and then slugger off to die. I put some on the patio last night and this morning found no blue pills but a lot of slug trails in circles but no slugs so it looks as if they work. Maybe they died happy...

My old dad used to pick them up and squash them between thumb and forefinger.  :o  Would probably work using other fingers too.  A bit messy though.

We have an old cottage and from time to time we have them on the quarry tiles in the kitchen, lovely to tread on when getting up early. Especially when wearing socks, bare feet is bad but socks have to be binned. Salt by the door stops them. Some blue pellets can be bad for birds who eat poisoned slugs. The effect of the other blue pills could be fun. Maybe we don't want go there?

We had frogs in our garden, which used to keep the slug population down. Unfortunately our cat discovered that frogs are easier to catch than mice and we now have no frogs, but plenty of slugs. I just need to convince the cat that slugs are easier to catch than frogs and we're good to go.  O0

But if they're stiff when they're dead doesn't it make it easier to pick them up ? %%
