Anyone recognise this motor mount?
« on: August 08, 2012, 11:10:39 am »

Anyone recognise this motor mount? It fits a 380/385 motor, and is exactly what I need for my new Kilo build....but, as you can see, it has a broken mounting lug.

Anyone know where to get a replacement? Or does anyone have a spare one?

Cheers,

Rich

Although strictly a wants request, we deemed it interesting enough for the Motor enthusiasts to have a look.

Can anyone help please.

That looks very much like the original motor mount from a Seaport Tug, I would have checked for you if I hadn't thrown it away !  %)

Won't that motor be a bit on the lively side for a kilo? Or are you gearing it down. A MFA 385 would be a lot slower on 6 volts, might be a bit too slow actually, depending on the prop being used.

Also how about mounting the motor to an oversized brass disk and screwing it directly into the end cap. Nice and simple.

Aah, lively it may be, but I have a cunning plan. Fit a speed controller...

I see your point about screwing the motor direct to the end cap...ideal, but how the hel heck do you make it watertight?

Even with a speed controller I think it's still too fast.

For that size of model and prop I would say a motor with a free running RPM of about 6-7kRPM is more appropriate , and it will be quick at that RPM. Bear in mind an Engel 212 manages about 7 mph submerged with a motor turning at about 5kRPM.

A good little geared motor would be the little GWS IPS packages. these were used a lot in slow flyers a few years ago. Long since surpassed with brushless motors, they still offer a very good power to weight ratio. I have two here, an 'A' unit with 5.9:1 ratio, and 'B' unit with a lower 7:1 ratio. I would say the 'A' unit would be just right, and you'll get lots running time, as they're quite efficient little units. Dead easy to mount too- a rectangular barb slides into the back of the unit.

Anyway, have a word with your WTC builder, and see what he thinks.
