When I got my first permanent job as a trainee chef, after leaving school in 1962,I fell in love with a Rolex watch in a local shop window. In 1965,I had saved up enough for a deposit, and got my Rolex Air-King day-date.Come the autumn of 1966,I had met and fallen in love, and negotiated with the jeweller,to exchange my watch for a diamond engagement ring and 24ct wedding ring,as well as paying off what I still owed.A recent valuation of the engagement ring, was £1500 and the wedding ring £250,so I dont think my wife of 46 years did too badly, and nor did I!!!
