I've got a Swatch. I was looking at getting something a bit 'nicer' a few months back, but decided that a few quid on a new battery was more sensible than £100 on a nice piece of machinery. I do like a nice watch (though as mentioned above only understated elegance) so when my lotto ticket wins a big one I may well treat myself :)

Well if you do ever decide to treat yourself, these days there are two or three small watch companies in this country that make some very nice elegant pieces for not a great deal of money.  They are made with Swiss automatic or manual movements often too, so you know you're going to get a lifetimes worth of wear out of it and when you think about it, you'd use a lot of batteries in that period of time, so not a bad investment.  :-))

I have a Smiths Empire wristwatch, 5 jewels, left to me by an uncle, I think it's from the 50's? It has an expanding bracelet and works fine, even though it's consigned to a drawer....I never wear it...lol

When I got my first permanent job as a trainee chef, after leaving school in 1962,I fell in love with a Rolex watch in a local shop window. In 1965,I had saved up enough for a deposit, and got my Rolex Air-King day-date.Come the autumn of 1966,I had met and fallen in love, and negotiated with the jeweller,to exchange my watch for a diamond engagement ring and 24ct wedding ring,as well as paying off what I still owed.A recent valuation of the engagement ring, was £1500 and the wedding ring £250,so I dont think my wife of 46 years did too badly, and nor did I!!!

Smiths were great watches in their day and lately a small British watchmaker has revived the Smiths brand with some nice little watches. The Empire was in it's day a classic and people collect them still, you should wear it....  :-)

I have a Patek Philippe Gondolo which I won in a game of cards with some Middle Eastern gentlemen.

Don't particularly like it but saving it for my garandsons.

You must have had a good hand!  ok2  . Nice Art Deco look to those though and some of that series were very nice watches, hopefully he'll appreciate it, at least if he doesn't want to wear it, it will help him get through university  :-)

Should have said," Grandsons", forgive the spelling mistake.

It's in rose gold, quite rare I think, hope so !!

The Omega certainly is if it is working. I have a gold self winding Omega which I inherited which needed an overhaul. Cost me £300 but is now apparently worth over £1,000. I wore it at formal nights on the Queen Mary 2 last year!

{-) {-) {-) {-) {-) .... Vacheron make some stunning watches, their most complicated watches selling for several hundred thousand pounds and even their basic standard offerings being in the £10,000 range ..... mind you, real ones tend not to have two 45 second markers on them !  {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

My 21st. birthday present from my parents has just passed it's 50th. birthday!  :embarrassed:
Yes, the face is brown and the strap was origionally light suede.
The self winding mechanism gave up the ghost after being drowned during a cyclone!  <:(

There are still quite a few of these old Dynamics around and you can even get the correct straps for them. However, should you ever want to get it properly restored, there is one company, Swiss Time Services in Essex, who are Omega's approved vintage service centre, who specialise in precisely that sort of job. They have access to all the parts needed for this sort of restoration and when it comes back, it will look like new! I've had quite a few watches done by them and I never cease to be amazed how well they do it...  Their website is .... http://www.swisstimeservices.co.uk/  If you send it to them they will give you a quote for the job before they do anything and it's down to you whether you get it done. Really nice people too and helpful. It would be nice to see it ticking again.  :-)

I have an Omega Seamaster that I got for 18 pounds from a buddy when he went broke gambling, he offered me double two weeks later if I would sell it back ,I said no. I used it a lot when I was diving, now it sits in a box. I had a friend bring me a Rolex back from Hong Kong ( he owed me), it sits next to the Omega. About 5 years ago I bought an Omega Speedmaster in a very very weak moment when we were racing, it sits in the same box. I have a Timex Expedition which I paid $39.95 for in the US & it keeps the best time of them all, varies by only 5 seconds a month & I wear it every day. I am with Dave(ACTion) I don't see a watch as a status symbol, if you do I feel you have your priorities very wrong, my opinion. My watches like my tools will go to my son & I have a feeling they will be sold to the highest bidder when I am gone & I don't care. Mick B. PS = I have a very cheap MG watch that a customer gave me as well & it keeps very good time too.

I don't see watches as a status symbol either, I see well made watches as the epitome of the engineering craft of timekeeping and navigation, which in itself has been of immense importance to the human race.

You seem proud of your tools and a good watch is precisely that, a high quality precision tool. .. If you leave your quality watches in a box, don't wear them or service them, as you would any other mechanical device, you can't really expect them to function well or work within the specification they are capable of either. ... :-)

I am glad you enjoy your watches Mike and moreso because your enthusiasm clearly extends beyond the 'ownership'. Nice to have a genuine interest in something.

I don't usually wear a watch and get the time from clocks or my mobile. I just find watches uncomfortable and oddly, though I am right handed, when I write my left wrist expands and watchstraps tighten? Go figure becase I'm stumped on that idea.

I have thought what watch would I buy after a lottery win? In all honesty I'd rather donate the cash to a local charity and think of the good being done.

I do have one new interest in watches Mike .............. how ever did you end up with the Olympic watch?

When I was skiing in northern Norway, my abilities certainly wouldn't have got me into the Swiss team, that's for sure !  {-)   Luckily I know a fellow Swiss collector whose abilities did and I had something that he wanted, so we did a swap.  :-)

Mrs ARMC's birthday present to me back in 2000.....Had 2 battery changes since then, and never skipped a beat even when worn to society cookouts , Cubbie's games and drinks aboard the Queen Victoria casino moored on the Fox in our city.
