Manufacture choice of name
bit like calling a mini by Riley elf..
Though in most cases you will find that the LAPTOP will have a full keyboard with numeric key pad where as the net-book note-pad have only the querty keys and the numeric s are under a function option.
I believe. :-)

Laptop = full product. Desktop in a portable format. usually has CD / DVD drive built in.

NoteBook = Small laptop, usually reduced functionality / speed... very popular with self important managers!

Netbooks = Similar / same as NoteBooks but aimed primarily at Internet use.

Ipads, Addroiod & Tablets = netbooks with touch input screens.

Although some laptops you might not want on your lap for long without the manufacturers asbestos trouser accessory, as most of the high end laptops throw out a considerable amount of heat (High end processors and video cards get very hot when operating under and degree of load) and some of the ventilation designs are laughable shall we say

Aha..it begins to make sense.

Scenario: I have a widescreen laptop on my desk, hooked up to scanner/printer, mouse, external hard drive, etc.

During the evenings I transfer myself from my desk to the sofa to watch tv, but I like to take the laptop with me to keep an eye on the forums, and chat online to the good lady...so I have to disconnect everything in order to do so, and then move everything back at bedtime. A pain in the proverbial...

What I'm contemplating is buying a smaller laptop/netbook/notebook etc purely for the use as above, something around a 10" screen, maybe a touch bigger. Just to keep an eye on the AMS forum, MBM forum, Facebook,  and 'er in Canada.

Any recommendations chaps? Not too expensive, I'm only a poor old pensioner nowadays...

You could get a net-book with wifi then set up a network so you can use your other items from your net-book while resting.
or you could get something like a Tablet with wifi (samsung do one which is quite good)
just my opinion

I do have a tablet (an Archos 8o G9) which is a great little piece of kit, but it doesn't like Facebook for some reason. It has WiFi, as does my laptop, both of which work perfectly with my BT Home Hub, but the tablet (apart  from disliking Facebook) hasn't got a copy and paste facility, hence the contemplation of a Netbook.

Seems quite an intelligent piece of equipment there  :-))

If you get a net book you will have to make sure it is loaded with an OS that is NOT basic as that OS is almost as much use as a chocolate fire guard IMO

The tablet has Android 4.0 installed with Ice Cream Sandwich (don't even think about it...  ;D)...it is a clever little thing, apart from using the BT WiFi, I also have a 3G dongle for it on the 3 network which is ideal for portable use when I'm out of any BT WiFi access spots. It also has a remote keyboard which is built in the carry case.

Maybe I'd be better off using the tablet and keeping off Facebook during the evenings...

Ta,

Basically size and functionality.

Lappie will do just about everything

Netbook basically just for surfing the net and notes etc

Notebook generally a small laptop.

Get a PC Tablet instead!

My android devices do copy and paste. Its a bit of a fiddle at times but works OK. Just like this:

If you can live with a scandinavian keyboard I can do you a good deal on a used baby laptop. (tho I can probably put a UK one on for a few extra £)
We have just had a load of ex lease laptops come in that will be on sale shortly

The actual keyboard on a laptop is one of the more easily replaced items. If perchance you happen to bathe the keyboard in coffee (DAMHIK) it tends to wash the printed track off the keyboard sandwich. The keyboard can be removed easily and a replacement one fitted by unplugging the flat cable that connects it to the main base unit and fitting a new one. In the case of the one E2V is offering, the English "Conversion" would mean the keyboard can be changed to the same layout you know and luv with a simple replacement.

@U-33

why don't you get your self a dockingstation for your laptop... then you can leave all your peripherals connected to the dockingstation, and with a press of a button you can take your laptop with you...

when finished then just put the laptop back into the dockingstation...!!

no need to get a second Laptop/Netbook/Notebook

Now you're getting technical....and although that may be a good working solution, it still involves unplugging things. And when you have fingers like a pound of Ffyes finest bananas, the less unplugging there is, the better.

I have enough trouble with using touch screens, unplugging and plugging things is adding to the problems....   <:(

Yes a very good idea but only if your laptop has the docking option which quite a few do not
I have two business machines which do have that option and then there are the other three laptops in the family which do not have that option.
I think most of the general laptops would not have the dock slots as they are aimed at the business end of the market and also carry a higher purchase price because of the added connection abilities
