Don't forget to keep your fingers OFF the circuitry because of static stuff.   O0

Perhaps I should elaborate.      :}

The static electricity from your body might be hazardous to the delicate silicon chips in the computer and we are advised not to touch their pins.  You will survive and neither hear nor see anything, but the effects can be costly.

(well you did ask !!)     {-)

I'm thinking maybe I should take the netbook  and the memory thing to my local PC whizkid and ask him nicely to fit it for me...

for just changing a memory stick I ground myself on a radiator or something similar.  Never had any issues and Ive been working on PCs for 25 years.

In all honesty tho I think the ESD card is over played.  there is a slight chance of damage but you would need to be fully charged.
In 25 years of working in the IT industry I have never actually seen any memory chip/stick that has failed due to ESD damage

same here.... never had any of those problems in 30 years of working on computers..

find a spare UK plug.... and a couple of feet long earth cable out of a three core cable...
connect a earth cable to the earth pin in the plug... bear the end of the cable and wrap it round your wrist... stick the plug in any socket of the house and your grounded, no static can build up...

Nice bit of kit... bet it has a price to match.

I have always been wary of these as I cant see how USB can trasfer video data for the screen fast enough

Colin...that's a highly impressive looking piece of kit. Way out of my league....but thank you anyway.

Now gents, this idea of attaching myself to a piece of wire and earthing myself by plugging myself into the mains....is this serious? Apart from lighting up various parts of my anatomy and frying my sole remaining brain cell, I forsee pain and lots of screaming...

yep.... it can be done that way.  If you look at your house earth system, the heating pipes/system are connected to the same earth as your electrical system

so in your situation a quick touch on the radiator before handling the memory will be fine

The warnings I gave Rich were not to panic you but to be aware that a static build up generated by being in contact with modern materials can be deadly to modern electronics. I too have worked in the electronics industry and been made aware of the precautions "Required" when servicing customers equipment. The second part,, relating to screw "Wrangling", was mentioned cos the number of pieces of returned equipment that "Just went wrong" that looks as though a drill has been used to remove the screws makes it rather obvious that they've "Had a go".  The screw manufacturers change the slot dimensions at regular intervals just to screw (bad pun) you up, at least 4 different types of cross slots to my knowledge, thus the "drilled" observation.

I'm not saying that you are incapable of removing 1 screw and plugging a board into your impending acquisition but be aware that if you need to reverse the process within the guarantee period, even with a piece of refurbished equipment, it may be a fight to have it repaired within the conditions of the small print if the seller can prove "Illegal tampering"

  Regards  Ian.

My laptop doesn't allow for connection to a docking station, so that's out of the window.

The decision has been taken, a netbook it will be.  I've taken a liking to this...

Only 1 gb of RAM on that which isnt a lot. You'll need to make use of the memory expansion pretty quickly imo.

Netbooks can be quite efficient in memory use, remember they have a lot less in them than Laptops/ desktops.
( NB. Where I work,ALL the desktop only have 1Gig RAM!!!!?!)

Just had a word with my tame computer guru, he agrees with you chaps, just a piece of wire wrapped around my wrist and connected to an earth will suffice...he also suggests holding the memory board with the packet it comes in as well...belt n' braces stuff.

Hopefully the n'book and the memory board will here either tomorrow or early next week...stand by for a report of how the installation went.

Or keep a watch towards the South East of the country for a mushroom cloud....

Naaaa, just be sensible.
Wash your hands.
Remove the Notebook battery and AC adaptor.
Open the memory compartment of the Notebook.
Just touch any metal part of the laptop before opening the bag and touching the memory stick.
Insert memory and click home.
When it doesn't fit, turn it around 180o
When it doesn't fit, turn it over 180o

When it doesn't fit, return it and buy the correct one!  {-)
