Great war Films & Movies....
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:06:58 am »

Following on from the Dunkirk movie topic......
Great Films & Movies

My favorite war movie (mini series) Das Boot .... German version.
Also Saving Private Ryan - (opening scenes almost as good as Star Wars!)
Band of Brothers, Longest day, Bridge too far, The Bridge at Remagen, The Bridge on the River Kwai... and anything with a submarine in it!

Also watched The Last Voyage (1960) the other weekend, with big Woody Strode, pulp but very cleverly done!

Oh yes, 633 and Mosquito Squadron!      Great aircraft...... and films!

I always wanted to see the last flying mosquito for myself and after many years I had made arrangements to go and see it at a display.... they crashed it the weekend before killing the pilot and co pilot....   :-\

Apocalypse Now - with Martin Sheen

Full Metal Jacket

Platoon - with Charlie Sheen

I know these are a different war, but there is an irony in that all these films carry a message about Washingtons ambitions.
In platoon there is an overt message in the closing scene about how we should learn from what has been happening here (Vietnam at the time). This film was made before 9/11. The message clearly was not learned.

And another favourite is 'Churchill The Hollywood Years'
With Christian Slater as Winston Churchill. Who is really an American who single handedly wins the war.
A film about rewriting history.
And Harry Enfield is brilliant as King George.

My all time favourite is "Ice Cold in Alex" but "Apocalypse now(Redux)" is a very close second. I also love "The Cruel Sea", "The Longest Day" and I am overawed by the realism in "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers". I read the book first for that last one, compelled me to buy the DVD series. "The R J Mitchell story" is a good one but not really a war movie as such.

Another compelling film for me is "We were Soldiers Once and Young" I am just reading that  book at the moment. I have a large collection of these movies and I still like to sit and watch them.

One other film that deserves a mention not only because it was good but that Micheal Bentine did a version in Potty Time, Where Eagles Dare.

Have you guys never seen Battle of the River Plate?!?!?!?

It's the scene when Langsdorff address the Uruguayan Prime Minister for extension of stay for repairs.

..... anyone  got the video or DVD and can check that for me :-\

For a lot who are mad about ships we seem to have forgotten "Sink the Bismark" and " In Which We Serve". Not forgetting "The Yangtse Incident".

"For Those in Peril" best ASR film ever, lots of HSLs and Rescue Launches based out of Dover.

Made by Ealing Studios during the war.

Also "Riddle of the Sands" great classic yachts etc.

I forgot about "The Yangtse Incident". I fancy having a go at Deans Marines HMS Amethyst because of that film. On the chinese theme "The Sand Pebble" is another good movie.

I have got "In which we serve" but I find it very disjointed because of the continual returning to the crew's memories.

On a slight tangent, I just only just noticed I have a copy of the book "The greatest raid of all" in a box set of paperback military history books.

How about 'A HILL IN KOREA' the only british film I know of the forgotten war.    As a serving officer there I see little mention of the conflict there and yet British forces served bravely there don't forget the 'Glorious Glouscesters'.     The other of my films is the anti war film, 'The long, the short and the tall'  ..   bigH

Hi Big H,

I first saw 'The Long, the short and the tall' last year.
I didn't know anything about it and must admit I was shocked at the brutal honesty of it - a must watch film methinks....  :'(

Hi All

Cottage to Let, Comes to mind it was not an action movie but was good just the same. A rather young "Arfur Daley" was a funny highlite.

Hi all,

Just back from holiday and trying to catch up with what you've all been up to.

I have two favourites from an earlier era - Korda's "Four Feathers", with a cameo appearance by the Nile gunboat "Melik"; and my all-time favourite film - "Oh What A Lovely War", which perfectly captures the grim humour and futility of WW1.
