new boy thinking about getting a boat
« on: September 01, 2012, 04:55:29 am »

Hi there everyone  :-))
been thinking recently about getting a RC boat to play about with. I'm currently into building scale off road trucks and 2.2 competition rock crawling

I have no idea what I'm buying when it comes to boats so i hope i have come to the rite place for advice I'm after something with a bit of speed but nothing an armature cant handle

few questions i want to know
1.  how much am i going to have to spend
2.  what makes and names should i be looking for
3.  will i be able to use my current spektrum dx3c rx with a boat
4.  will all my 2 and 3s lipos be ok to use
5.  are there rules where you can use the boats as i have a large reservoir near me i was thinking of using

Hope someone can help me so i don't end up wasting money on this possible venture in to boats

if your interested here are the cars i currently run

Hi Rawalker 666/

Welcome to mayhem. I hope you enjoy your stay with us. I also play around with Tamiya products in between waiting for my boat paint to dry.

Regarding your enquiry about costs, may I refer you to our  'Light'  article on boat costs.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=39218.0

It is a different world in boating here, as time and costs seem to go out of the window so have a look around and ask any questions you like.   :-))

Cheers

On the other hand, model boats are far cheaper than flying or cars, it's just when you start getting seriously into building scale boats or something exotic it that things start getting expensive. For example...

Boat hull off ebay - £23
Two Turnigy Plush 18 amp ESC's - $22.10
Two Hobbyking Donkey St2004's - $10.30
HXT900 servo - $2.69
Two shafts - £12
Two couplings - £8
Two props - £4
Bit of velcro, some glue, batteries and tx/ rx we both have already.

Total- peanuts.

This is what I've bought today... %)

there are some cheapish rtr boats both in scale and fast electric style guises  done by hobby engine
http://www.hobbyengine.com.hk/catalog/product.php?cid=30&osCsid=ae294a82c6e2e9d984a6cbda5eb5ee36
the southampton is quite a nice scale model and once you put some decent electronics and a better battery in it makes a really nice model ( its based on the tug boat Wyeforce )
this is my 1 that has been renamed to Wyeforce now

as the Wyeforce

the fast electric style boats i have no experiance off but if anything like the Southampton should be pretty good
theres also this
http://www.howesmodels.co.uk/RadioControl/viewProduct.php?ProdID=7819
and once the toy grade electrics are removed and its painted up can make a nice model as well
this is my 1 of those

as you see both these make quite acceptable scale models for not a lot of outlay and with doing your cars etc you will probably have rx's and servos in your spares bin already ( tho i did have to use a micro servo in the destroyer for the rudder
and theres more here as well

ohh and welcome aboard  :-))

thats a bit better on price will look into that got a good esc already that would easily power 2 motors , i ussed to use it in my xr10 crawler
i also got a few waterproof servos kicking around and lots of 540 size motors ranging from 10 turn upto 90 turn if they are any good for a boat

the club 500 looks my best bet at the moment
