Tugboat PRESTON build
« on: September 01, 2012, 08:18:34 am »

As I don't have enough unfinished projects on the go  %) I've started another project that's been in the back of my mind for a while.
A good friend of mine recently gave me some photos he took about 20 years ago when we were members of the West Australian Model Boat Club, they were of a competition day at a place called Kardinya
and there was my old comp boat, it was a little balsa tugboat called Preston built from a kit, actually it was the first boat I built.
Seeing the photos reminded me of the fact that I still had all the plans and had always wanted to build another one so I have dug out the plans scaled it up from 540mm to 1:12 scale which works out at about a metre.

I'll take my usual seat with you Mermod - it must be nice to be redoing your first boat :}
Are you on any of those old pictures? Pop one up O0

Nice to have you along Norseman, I'll try and make this a quick build, would like to have it ready for a display we do on Australia day, the photos are pretty scary, boy was I nerdy, didn't know the photos existed and always regretted not having any pics of our comp days, pre digital camera age.
A bit of a tinge of sadness aswell, atleast 1/2 of the people in the yellow club shirts have passed away and the young bloke leaning into the back of the blue hatchback is my younger brother that I haven,t seen since leaving Western Australia 17 years ago.
Friends and family may come and go but model boats are forever.

Frames and keel transferred to CAD , then laser cut and set up with the first pair of stringers in place (tasmanian oak)

due to some camera issues I've missed a couple of steps but here's the latest pics.
Hull sheathed in balsa and sanded smooth and a layer of Bote Cote epoxy with some fine glass cloth.

Hi norseman, as it was originally a kit in the 90s I think I might receive a nasty letter from a lawer somewhere if I did that, they used to be sold by the Freedom Song Boatworks but hasnt been listed on their site for many years now, might do hulls only though

Hi Mermod, your work as always is first class. I am always interested in the builds you have going because of your attention to detail & quality of the finished product. You could talk to the previous kit makers & find out if they would object to you making a kit or buying the rights from them. Thanks again for sharing, always nice to see first class workmanship, Mick B.

Hi Mick, thanks for the kind words, just might have to fire off an email and see what happens.
Irishcarguy, thanks for the PM, the picture comes up straight away but thats it, no mention of the kit anywhere that I can find.

Todays progress, a coat of primer, some spot putty and the waterline check measured, might score the line lightly so it shows up in the mould.

a coat of paint on the plug, now ready for moulding, might take a while with a new baby in the house, couldnt get any better photos as it was still wet off the gun.

Decided to put one more coat of 2 pack on, high gloss this time. Also cut out a template for the cap rail.

Hi Jason, I ran out of time on this one, wanted to have it ready for a particular display day but didnt make it, the plug is currently hanging fron the workshop ceiling waiting to be molded, I kinda started a few other projects since then but a s soon as I get another batch of polyester resin I will be back into it.

gday ,
i built the same/similar tug , under a different name ,USA plan , and the hull is loverly , but the screw is too small ,at 55mm +4 blade , and underpowered ,it needs a 75mm prop ,or twin screws .
im goint to try a different motor , as now low rev , low power draw type ,will try decerperm or brushless w g/box ,no time yet
regards bill s

Cool, any photos, I had a friend drop by today that has bought a Honda 4 stroke grass trimmer and thought that would go nicely in that hull..............now to convince the wife.
