Upto 13 ships but expect that to be cut to about 6 or maybe 5! Its also said Brazil may be interested. Think they need to be told no deal until you sort argentina's rambling over the Falklands islands. If they want our ships, they can bloody well start supporting us down there!  <*<

The design of the Royal Navy's latest warship has been revealed by the Ministry of Defence.

The announcement on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship has been described by officials as a "significant milestone" in a programme which will support "thousands of UK shipbuilding jobs".

Basic specification images show sleek stealth features, familiar to modern warships, making them harder to detect.

The ship will be 148 metres long with a displacement of 5,400 tonnes.

The MoD has been working with BAE Systems since 2010 to determine the basic design for the ship. Detailed specifications of the vessel will now be examined.

Vertical missile silos for a range of weapons, such as cruise missiles, will be housed on board along with a medium calibre gun.

The hangar on board will house a Merlin or Wildcat helicopter and there will be extra space for unmanned drones, underwater vehicles or other specialist equipment.

Minister for defence equipment, Peter Luff, said: "The Type 26 will be the backbone of the Royal Navy for decades to come.

What, 12 ships then decided only on 6? Yes.

I guess all ships now will be built to be more adaptable. It means they need fewer specialised ships in total.

Seems well equipped to hand out heavy offence, and probably be able to defend itself against big, heavy, distant stuff, but where's the protection against something small and close?
I seem to recall the US Air Force going down this road in the past when they decreed that dog fighting was a thing of the past, before they found out that not everybody was reading from the same rule book.

Looks very similar to pictures of a new Australian ship I have seen recently, I think it was on `Border Patrol` on TV.   Pete

No doubt the as the development takes place the weapons fit and capabilities will be reduced to save costs and end up as 'fitted for but not with'................

LOL! And I still cant find it. Thought I'd posted in Chit Chat.

Going to be sizeable ships although I dont think for one moment the Navy will get 13 especially as those two carriers will need paying for (even if one is mothballed)!

I'm still not totally convinced about the value of "stealth" on a platform that is changing its profile every few seconds due to movement in a seaway.....but if I can assume it works, why spoil the effect by having those anchors messing everything up? BY.

I am incline to agree with BY on the stealth claims, the only vessels that I have seen somewhat hard to find on a normal ships radar where the the old Russian spy trawlers, then I put it down to all their excessive aerials absorbing our radar signals. The sparky on the Rollicker used to have to open the back of our radar set and tune it up in power, then the target .5 of a cable looked like matchstick head on a screen while a small wooden trawler looked like a VLLC going across it. But at the end of the day radar will pick it up and a heat seeking missile will still clearly see the engine exhaust. But my only real concern that these vessels will have all the tech toys to find targets but have no real teeth to deal with them as has so many vessels in the past ended up.

The hull shape looks very type 23ish. If so, that will save a few billion and throw up the same problems, lack of internal space for upgrades! diesel electric power?

Hi Fishhead,
Talking of diesel Electric, I seem to remember the talk of in the mid 1980's of the what was designated European design frigate, which was reputed to be powered by Diesel or Gas turbine/electric driven boats, but apart from pencil sketches it came to nothing.
