Neil, it does say "First shots of the new Shannon prototype FCB2 at sea as she undergoes machinery commissioning trials in the Solent" - I suppose they want to make sure it all works before trying it in a Force 10 :-)

She does seem to stop quite quickly too :o

The RNLI has issued a significant press release today about the Shannon Class lifeboat and has announced the names of the first 11 stations that will receive one.  The first two production boats/tractors  will be placed in the "Relief Fleet"

I was lucky enough to witness the "beaching" and recovery onto the trailer,YESTERDAY,before the press were invited. The sea yesterday was quite rough, and with the wind against the tide,PLUS the tremendous current flow,at Sandbanks,Dorset, adding to the problems in handling any type of boat. But no,she appeared to come in with no obvious problems at all. When I spoke to Tommy Cocking, the recently retired Coxn at St.Ives, and heavily involved in the development trials, and loved the Mersey, told me he" would swap the Shannon for the Mersey tomorrow" She is a very much different design to the FCB2,and in my humble opinion, will prove to be one of the best ever performers in the whole of the RNLI fleet.

I wonder if Model Slipway will bring out a model of this to complement the Trent and Tamar.

I hope they do - or at least the R.N.L.I. makes plans available. Definitely going to be the prettiest boats in service.

I doubt it, seeing as they are scaling back and going into semi retirement.....

can't see them developing another new kit.
last time I spoke to Laurie white at Blackpool he wouldd have given it up there and then had he been able to find a buyer for the company........so can't see that happening.............perhaps Speedline Models might......that's their forte'

The RNLI  tells me they will make plans available just as soon as the final arrangement of the Lifeboat are in place. For instance,a new spray chine has recently been added, and other modifications may be still made. Most major alterations have now been implimented.
I for one, hope Adrian at Speedline will bring out one of his wonderful kits of her eventually

Does anybody know which stations are going to get the first few Shannon's? I heard a rumour that Swanage might be near the top of the list.

First station is Dungeness, then Exmouth, but I am not sure of the order for the other confirmed stations; listed here in alphabetical order...........

Amble; Douglas; Dungeness; Exmouth; Fleetwood; Hoylake; Ilfracombe; Llandudno; Lowestoft; Montrose; Scarborough; Selsey; Skegness; St Ives; Swanage; Wells; and Workington

I am sure Tommy Cocking who is the ex Coxn at St.Ives, and who has been heavily involved with the development and trials of the Shannon, will not mind me posting one of his photos of her in action off St.Ives earlier this month. What a craft she is!

They are expected to be in service for up to 50 years with re-fits, so a long time to wait yet.

Trents will have a lifespan of 20-25 years and will then be retired. Severns after their normal 20-25 years will be completely disassembled and rebuilt as basically new boats (possible with new names as well...).

Thanks for clearing that up.

I had heard that once the 40 Shannons have been built then some Trents wll be replaced by Batch 2 Tamars.
