OK, this is a bit OT but related, so I'll not start a new thread.

As I'm kitbashing my Aziz kit into something a bit different but I hope still realistic, I've been looking at photos, etc, to research the 'new look'.
Now the Aziz and most other AHTS are more than 50m long, so fall into the 'two white lights' ship category when not towing. The Aziz and one or two of the ones I've got pics of have a main mast on the superstructure and a second one on the forecastle (which according to the kit instructions carries 3 white lights). From what I can see around all the rules/diagrams this makes sense.

The problem I have is that most of the AHTS I have pictures of, and most are more modern ships than the Aziz, most seem to have only one mast - nothing prominent elsewhere. I can only surmise that either the rules have changed recently (the last ten years or so) or that the requirement for the second white steaming light for 50m+ vessels to be above and behind the first one can be met by it being just a few feet above and behind - ie. in different locations sprung off the same mast.

Can anyone shed any light on this? (no pun intended, honest.)

Nice picture but sorry, it doesn't help. Forth Hunter is only 27m long so does not require the second white light.

I have sailed on ahts >50m with one steaming light on foremast and three on mast on monkey island. Have sailed on others with three on foremast and one on mast on monkey island as aziz. Have sailed on a few with only one set of three as in <50m but with flag state exemption for no for'd light. The international regulations for the prevention of collision at sea (1972) specify and define all lights on all vessels. Position, numbers, colour, arcs of visibility, when they are to be shown and brightness are all covered.
Jerry.

No changes to positioning and number of lights etc, but as with all rules, there are exceptions, in this case it is possible due to the construction of certain vessels positioning can be different, eg aircraft carriers. It is ultimately down to classification. But yes, it is possible to bave the white mast lights closer together than the rules so as to still show the correct lights.
