Highly recommended apps....
« on: September 16, 2012, 02:01:13 am »

Just a though, this will probably die a quick death, but, have you got any apps for iphone or android to recommend?

For iPhone (and probably android too) I'd definitely suggest getting 'Silent Hunter' a fun little U-Boat game where you sink merchant shipping, destroyers, cruiser and corvettes and shoot down aircraft.

Also the Photobucket app is very handy for uploading photos directly from your phone and then using the codes to post to forums like this!

And 1 of the apps for iPhone I'd say was essential, is 'Find iPhone', where you set up the account and then if your phone gets lost or stolen, you can track where it is from another iphone, and get it to ring, show a message, lock the phone or completely wipe its memory!

Using it as a telephone.    :}

My mobile is the size of a house brick and still has some of the 10 pounds left that I splashed out on it last year.    I was amazed at my 4 year old granddaughter showing me her I-pad and brushing her finger all over the screen to move things around.  Fascinating for the money !!

I find Maps with Me very useful. It allows me to download maps when I have WiFi access, then have access to the maps when I'm out and about. With a GPS input, I can see where I am O0. Google Maps is supposed to have an offline function, but for some reason I can't load the latest version with this facility to my Tablet.

Not that i promote piracy of any sort... :embarrassed:

however maybe some of you have heard of jailbreaking (for iphone and ipad). This allows you to install hacked apps and therefore are downloaded in a separate store and are all free etc...

The real use of the jailbreak is the mods and tweaks that can be made to the device to improve user experience and makes you into a true nerd. If apple were to actually get off their high horse and allow their devices to be used how users want to use them, i would think they would make even more money...

I have owned an iphone and currently own a samsung galaxy s2 and i can say the difference is very black and white. The screen on the iphone is so much better, its smoother and i find the apps better in general.

same for the ipads and android tablets, apple beat them hands down.

The issue with the S2 is the screen seems very jumpy and less accurate than the iphone and so the apps suffer in my opinion. One clear difference app wise on both devices is the BBC news app. On the iphone/ipad, its so smooth when scrolling from story to story, where as the S2 is jumpy and not precise at all.

The main useful apps i use are

Fight radar pro
Marine traffic pro
BBC news
BBC iplayer
I also have a game called bubble mania on the ipad/iphone and bubble shoot on the S2 - both very addictive.

If your interested in free apps for the android devices, you need an app called blackmart alpha.. this is available on the internet.

remember, I or this site don't promote jail breaking, it will void your warranty (not that its usually worth anything anyway), however your devices will be free of the restrictions and costs that apple like to impose.

I did have a so-called 'smart phone' for a while, a Nokia, which had some very strange features.
The on-screen Qwerty keyboard was just 4 cm wide, which I could almost span with two finger widths. It was supposed to turn 90' when you turned the handset, but never did.  Without scale model sized fingers it was impossible to type anything.  ie: text, log in, internet etc.
Unfortunately the new 'reactive screen' meant I could not use a stylus.
Not receiving any calls I found out that factory settings were 'silent' and 'no vibrate' so unless you noticed the screen light up you were left with the missed call list.
In terms of Apps, there was a SatNav supplied, which could only approx your position within half a mile.

I now have a nice non-smart Nokia with a big slide out keyboard.  I can make and receive calls, and can text too.  Why would anyone want a pocket-PC when they have a full-screen computer handy at home, and can't use a mobile when in the car or at work ?  Do I need the complete woprks of Shakespeare, teas-made, television, video camera etc in my pocket ?  No.

Bring back the old useful mobile phones that are useable by people with adult sized fingers.

As for all this stuff on your phone, like office stuff and what not, i think its pointless. They simply are too small and the battery doesnt last long enough for it to be on any use.

The ipad is very useful, far more useful than i ever thought it would be.

I primarily bought it for use as an aircraft sat nav, using the skydemon software, however when not flying, i use it to download and watch BBC iplayer stuff, read the news, go on facebook and this very forum when not at home.

TIP - get yourself on O2 phone network, it by far has the fastest 3g connection i have ever had the pleasure of using. I am currently on vodafone for the S2 - which are useless in my opinion. No bandwidth anywhere... Where as the ipad has O2 and is excellent. For example, I was 3000ft up, 5 miles off the coast while having full speed 3g, enabling me to download ILS approach charts off the NATS website.

Couple of reasons, I can have my entire music collection on my phone (some 10,000 songs), and plugged into a little device I can listen to any of it while in the car. Entire works of shakespeare, no thanks, but being able to have multiple books in my pocket means for the 1st time in 4 or more years I've actually just read a book, cos wherever you are, if you have a few spare mins you can read a few pages, makes breaks at work go so much faster. Also handy to always have google maps with you, a couple of times I've broken down with no idea where I was, being over 500 miles from home 1 time, simply open the map, let it find me, then tell Mr RAC man on the phone!

Mobiles aren't 'just' for phoning and texting, I take all my photos and movies on my phone.... And the screen on new 'smartphones' are now big enough for anyone to be able to use the qwerty keyboard, honest. Even my luddite dad who spent years saying he'd never buy a computer, and didn't see the point of an iPod, and why the hell do you need all that stuff on your phone (when i bought my iPhone), has each time given in, and spent £1000 on a Mac setup to link his tv, with all films, music (all old vinyl collection included) and all his photos including all his old slides dating from the 70's, then bought an iPod, and is now about to buy his 2nd iPhone.

I will admit though there are plenty of completely pointless apps, some are addicting, and others are genuinely useful!

Oh another brilliant app is 'redlaser' where if for example you go into HMV and see a dvd or cd you want you use the app to 'scan' the barcode and it will search online, and locally within a certain radius of your current location, and find all the prices, so if you can get it cheaper round the corner, it'll tell you, and you don't get ripped off!

Works with everything, saved me £50 when we bought our TV, and saved loads on various other things, even works for bottles of coke in the supermarket!

Flyings easier than driving. You can go hands off when trimmed correctly to be able to fiddle about in the cockpit. I dont make a habbit of it, but the point being that the ipads a very capable device and O2 is a very capable network.

Always carry the maps with me - im not that daft!

Even if i left the maps at home and GPS went Pete Tong, then there's still radar services available to help etc..

Skydemon is the clear way forward for GPS. Tim, the guy who created it wasn't even going to release it for iPad  %%

Im glad he saw sense and he should now be rolling around in cash - and rightfully so, its worth every penny

Very true lol.

Skydemon keep adding new features all the time and it certainly saves a lot of fiddling about with a plog, frequency lists etc etc.

The paper map/chart could be well out of date if not corrected regularly, whereas an emap/chart can be updated instantly the info becomes available.
As we were taught back in the sixties, electronics are an aid to navigation, no more no less.
Dan is up there with the flight maps (belt) and iPad (braces).
