Lacquering Matt Humbrol
« on: September 17, 2012, 03:28:46 pm »

Hi... Could anyone suggest a lacquer that will work on Humbrol matt paint?  I want to paint an area matt then spray it to get a semi gloss finish... I have got some Acrylic car lacquer but I can't determine if this will react with the paint. I have tried some tests but with varying results! Any advice would be good.

Don't use a car spray, it will almost certainly react. Ronseal polyurethane interior matt varnish should do the job (not the water based quick dry variety). Although matt, it does have a slight sheen. There is a satin variety too but you might find this to be too glossy.

You will need to thin the varnish if spraying. Paul Freshney, Editor of Model Boats, gets a superb finish on his models and he uses 4 parts thinner to one of varnish and then as many coats as necessary to achieve the finish he wants.

One of these Martin: http://www.ronseal.co.uk/products/ultra-tough-varnish

The exterior variety are essentially the same but contain UV filters which give a yellowish tint.

I use the satin fuel proofer (and button cleaner) from  http://www.flairmodels.co.uk/Finishing/Paintframes.htm and have found no problems over enamels or cellulose paints. It also does not appear to yellow with age.

Thanks for all the replies...
Unfortunately I don't have an airbrush at the moment.... I have heard somewhere that there are some for sale for a good price in Lidl... :-))

Whilst experimenting, I tried some U-Pol Etch primer... it sticks extremely well to styrene card!

You can thin the polyurethane 1:1 and just brush it on using a fine flat brush - that's what I do.

Part of the reason i wanted to use flat colour was so i could brush paint... I enjoy hand painting much more than spraying... I like the idea of using the polyurethane as you describe Colin...

I always use Humbrol Satin Cote to finish my models. It gives all the paintwork a uniform finish - even if you have to use gloss paint for some colours.
