Novak 55t motor
« on: September 26, 2012, 12:02:09 pm »

Hi all,
A quick question about this motor(Novak 55t rock crawler motor @7.2v).As a builder of scale rock crawlers i have a few of these motors lying around now i know they produce massive amounts of torque and turn slowly but has anyone fitted one in a boat.I have a Banckert tug (new build)and as i have it already can i fit it.

Many thanks
Mart

If they are slow turning, then you are a hiding to nothing.  This would be because you would have to gear them up for speed, which involves more amps.

I have the same problem with Tamiya motors which I cant use in a boat, unless it's a Paddle steamer.

Slow is relative. They should be fine for direct drive use on a scale model. Thinking back many years I think Chart Micro Mold did a low drain 550 can motor with similar windings for slower uses. The typical winding for a standard (high speed) 500/540 type motor is between 27 and 32 winds. The more winds, the slower and lower ampage the motor is. My guess, fine.

I have had a look at the spec on the motor and it turns at 8200rpm at 7.2v just about tug speed i would have thought I will give it a try anyway no harm in having a go is there.
Cheers.

The speed (and motor) is about perfect for a tug or displacement boat turning a prop from about 35 mm to 45 mm at the specified voltage :-)).

The torque is actually relatively low but is more than enough to spin the aforementioned props so a good motor to use.

Cheers

Sounds similar to the Carson Poison Truck motor

I have one in my king hauler truck and it certainly has plenty of torque, much more than the standard Tamiya 540 supplied with the kits

I always thought they would be good for a tug or something similar
