Southampton Tug - Our first boat.
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:54:25 pm »

Well, not strictly a build log, this will be more of a Modify log.

One of these turned up at my office today thanks to Amazon and Prezoom:D  Who says you can't buy stuff that can only be delivered in the US. Essentially this is so we (me and 5yo son) can go to the boat club pond and not have to rely on other members lending us their boats while ours are being built.

Hope to get it in the water at the local pond this weekend. I've read a few threads on forums, nearly all positive,  about modifying the speed controllers and motors and will be doing the same, plus a repaint and naming to make it more like the actual Wyeforce tug.

At the very least it will something to play with, enjoy while the other boats get built. At the very least it will stop my five year old nagging that he doesn't have a boat to drive. ;)

I know, same thing though.

Very capable little boats to be fair. Plenty of scope for improvement..

First upgrade completed - took it home last night at replaced the stock receiver with a Turnigy to work with the 9X. A bit of fiddling but working in the end with a quick spin in the bath tub.  :-)

Very happy 5yo boy this morning when he woke up!! %%

Tonights job is to tie on all those tyres. Weather forecast is good so it should get it's bum wet tomorrow or Sunday.  :-))

In the list of planned mods are independent motor control, new motors (but only when the current ones give up), repaint and detailing of the real Wyeforce. Working lights and radar are beyond my current capabilities but might feature later.

Next mods will be decent batteries (already ordered) to extend sailing time. I'm sure I (and 5yo) are going to enjoy this tug.

Hey Andy,

How have you set up the 9X Tx? Vee tail mixing?

Martin, I haven't done anything that fancy just yet, although I think some others have. I'm very new to this - both the boat building and the RC stuff. I'm still using the stock esc, just unplugged from stock rx and replaced with Turnigy. I think some have used the vee tail mixing instead of independent 'tank' control.

Cheers

I've got some 5000 mah 2s lipos on order so hopefully I should get similar running times.  :-))

if your going to use lipos then youl need lipo compatable esc's as they have a low volt cutoff or at very least a low volt alarm
