Brass etching primer
« on: September 03, 2012, 11:17:36 pm »

Can anyone recommend an etching primer for use on brass which can be oversprayed successfully with Halfords'  etc., acrylic spray paints?

Brush applied primer would be preferable - lots of small fitments to treat at different stages of model construction - failing which spray can application would have to suffice.

Thanks in anticipation of any positive responses.

Hi there, This is pretty good stuff, I have just used it to prime my TVR1A steam engine, gives a nice dense coat on which to paint.

Halfords sell an ACID etch primer which would do the job for you

Good stuff, have used it on the nylon components of the rotor head on a RC Helicopter prior to painting a metallic effect onto it. It stuck to that so should work on most materials..

You can purchase etch primer in cans for brush painting. However if this is just for small components, I just dip them in some ferric chloride (PCB etchant) for a little while, wash them off, then prime them with any conventional primer, and that works fine. The etchant does the same thing by roughening the surface with milions of microscopic pits, providing something for the paint to grip onto.

You can purchase ferric chloride in Maplins or from Rapid online.

Precision Paints single pack primer works OK for me but has a limited shelf life which is a pain when you only use small amounts. I shall note the info given on this thread.
