Are Epoxy and Polyester resins compatable?
« on: October 01, 2012, 10:58:18 am »

Is this practice a definite NO No or could they be compatable if one is laid over another in a specific order eg., epoxy over polyester (or the other way round)? %)

Any bond between the resins will be purely mechanical. Plenty of people use epoxy adhesives to glue parts into polyester hulls. But ultimately it's best to use polyester with polyester, and epoxy with epoxy, especially if you're coating a whole hull.

For glueing items into a polester hull, I find the modified acrylic adhesives are far superior in strength to epoxy based adhesives.

For SUBCULTURE.

Thanks for feedback and apologies for my ignorance, but could you name some of the modified acrylic adhesives you refer to? %)

Deluxe materials Super Crylic and Fusion, Pattex Stabilit Express, Devcon Plastic Welder I and II. Starloc adhesives also sell these adhesives (good prices too). The only thing acrylics don't stick are waxy plastics like polyethylene, but that goes for most glues, and you don't generally use those type of plastics in modelmaking.

The resulting bond is stronger than the material, but you need to leave for 24 hours for full cure. Totally waterproof too.
