I took the City & Guilds Autocad exam (Passed with honours)
It is extremely basic and to be quite honest not worth it if you want to use cad privately
Invest in a good book, there are plenty
If tell me what version of Autocad you want to learn I can sort one out for you

Well my issue is that I don't have Autocad. I simply can't afford it and at best, i can get a months evaluation version which really isnt enough time to learn it, unless im on the damn thing 24/7 and even then , i think its something you have to keep using.

We have used Autocad at work for years but now have invested in some "Solidworks" stations for drawing and 3D modelling the CNC lathes we make.

The makers of Solidworks are "Dassault Systems" who offer a free professional grade 2D CAD package which can be downloaded from the internet.

It is called "Draftsight"

Recommended and its FREE!!

Hello all,

I'm relatively new to Mayhem, and have a keen interest in CAD as it applies to model boating. I've been researching this topic and looking at Librecad.  It's free, runs in all three environments (win/mac/linux) and there are even some video tutorials on Utube. I's not 3D modeling like Sketchup, it's a straight up CAD package and does produce the standard format cad files.  I've installed it on my PC (linux) a few weeks ago and have been struggling along to try to get over the learning curve.  Anyway, regardless of whichever path you decide to take in the way of software, I think this is a great idea and will get a lot of followers on the thread.  I can't wait for the brain dump to start! :-)

Before jumping in at the deep end, what are the minimum requirements regarding equipment, namely the PC, processor, monitor, operating system et all.

In a nutshell can I do all this CAD, CAM, CNC (CNC not spelled out) on my old PC running XP. {:-{ {:-{

Will the tutorial be styled similar to 'CAD for Dummies' for instance.

I can run CAD on my 3 year old laptop running XP, its slower. for work now I run cad via remote desktopping on a machine in the office, good enough for the few hours a week I work.
Its only now  I have the time that I am able to really explore 3D in CAD in my microstation package I can lay down planking one at a time with the twists, but have encountered the odd occasion where a plank will twist 180 degrees between frames, which sort of spoils the look.

I've always found programs run, they just dont run very well on older machines.

I have a little normal £350 acre laptop which runs autocad fine, just 3d makes it chug a bit.

Also have a big dell gaming laptop which runs everything with ease.

Current Versions of software tend to be designed to run on new chipsets and os's, so if you want software to run on an older machine generally the best thing to do is to look for software which is a little bit older, maybe a couple of years or roughly around about the same time that your machine was produced. That way the software should work well. Although you may not have the same functionality as the latest software you will most likely have enough features for what you actually want to do and it will be cheaper or even free of charge. The other advantage of using older software is that bug fixes have sometimes been worked out unlike new versions where the bugs are still being discovered.

The software will run on older machines, mostly you will sit and wait while it catches up, in a home use environment this is just frustrating, in a work / production environment, for an average engineer just looking at drawings and doing a few mods, probably acceptable - for a full time CAD draughtsman, totally unacceptable as each slowdown is a waste of their skill. when we upgraded machines I estimated the new machine would gain us at least 40 minutes a day in achievable work - but only for a CAD expert could tell the difference in speed, just saving a few seconds here - a few seconds there, a casual CAD user could not even notice the speed increase (lack of sitting tapping fingers while waiting on a process to complete).

Any computer made in the last 10 years will be suitable for 3-D modelling for the average hobbyist, you don't need anything fancier than that. I believe the main difficulty is the way 3-D packages are designed, I find them to be counterintuitive and difficult to learn and I think that puts off many hobbyists from taking this up unless they're very computer savvy to begin with. It seems at present it is often necessary to learn three or four program's  in order to be able to cover all bases when it comes to having parts produced with say lasercutting CNC machining and 3-D printing. What's really required is a straightforward package with the bare number of features required to model parts.

Missed this one, :-  http://www.doublecad.com/

From the Turbo cad people, if you can fish your way round AutoCad, you'll have no problems with this one.

Hi All,

Just back from a couple of days rest before the big push for Blackpool show.
I knew there would be a bit of interest in this but not as much as has been shown so far..

I didn't think a tutorial was the way to go more a questions nd answer session given there are so many programmes out there.

Two more for the mix -

These are opensource -

Vectorworks - cad package easy free cad pack.
Meshlab - format changer - Ideal for converting say 3D's to stl for 3d work.

For quick work i think sketchup is good but the price is beginning to creep up.
Delftship for hulls is also a good programme.
Unfortunately autodesk family still seem to be industry standard with price tags to suit.

Be interesting to see how the thread , questions & answers develop ..

Regards
Kim

industry standard for most industries is AutoCAD, but for rail and utilities the standard is generally Microstation (unfortunately there's no great cost saving between the two).

Doesn't look free on their site. Just a 30 day trial , which is not free software, by my definition.
